The new u.s. sanctions against Iran come into force on Monday

While the administration said it has reduced Iran's daily oil exports by more than a million barrels a day, Pompeo acknowledged the US granted eight countries waivers to continue buying Iran's oil without penalties for six more months.

The sanctions take effect six months after President Donald Trump pulled out of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, saying the United States could not prevent an Iranian nuclear bomb under the "decaying and rotten structure of the current agreement".

Late last week, US government officials signaled that the United States would be granting waivers to eight countries to continue temporarily buying Iranian oil, on the condition that they had significantly reduced purchases from Iran.

Earlier in the day, Zarif said that the fresh round of USA sanctions on Iran has failed to cut Tehran's oil exports to zero.

The US Secretary of State, Mike Pompeo, said: "I promise you that doing business in Iran in defiance of our sanctions will ultimately be a much more painful business decision than pulling out of Iran".

South Korea said on Monday it had been granted a waiver to continue at least temporarily importing condensate from Iran and running financial transactions with the Middle Eastern country.

This is the second round of U.S. sanctions against Iran after the USA withdrew from the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, commonly known as the Iran nuclear deal or Iran deal, in May this year, China's official Xinhua news agency reported on its website today.

"We are intent on making sure the Iranian regime stops siphoning its hard currency reserves into corrupt investments and the hands of terrorists", Mnuchin said in a statement.

Speaking at a daily news briefing in Beijing, foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying did not directly comment on whether China had been granted exemption from the Iran sanctions by the United States. Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Russia, Qatar and Kuwait export more crude oil to Japan than Iran.

Last year, Iran was the sixth-biggest oil exporter in the world.

During the dialogue, the Indian side had "frankly" put across their position on oil imports from Iran.

"We are at an economic war situation".

"Yesterday, Saddam was in front us, today Trump is front of us".

The second wave of renewed USA sanctions on OPEC's third largest exporter officially started on Monday targeting Iran's energy, shipbuilding, shipping, and financial sectors.

China was given a waiver to import around 360,000 bpd from Iran during the exemption period, sources told Reuters, while South Korea was given a daily quota of around 130,000 bpd, according to Platts.

The three countries combined produced more than 33 million barrels per day (bpd) for the first time in October, meaning they alone meet more than a third of the world's nearly 100 million bpd of crude oil consumption. Oil is the country's top export.

The reinstated sanctions follow the Trump administration's decision in May to pull out of the worldwide nuclear deal. The countries will be able to buy Iranian oil for up to 180 days despite the reimposed sanctions. "The European Union does not approve of it", said European Economic Affairs Commissioner Pierre Moscovici, regarding the sanctions.

Some US sanctions were already reimposed on Iran in August, shortly after Washington pulled out of the 2015 nuclear deal in May.

"That's why they want us to round up our missiles".

Japan said it was in close communication with the United States.
