Trump congratulates Brazil's new far-right president

Jair Bolsonaro, a brash far-right congressman who has waxed nostalgic for Brazil's old military dictatorship, won the presidency of Latin America's largest nation Sunday as voters looked past warnings that he would erode democracy and embraced a chance for radical change after years of turmoil. With an 11 percentage point victory, he emerged as the clear victor despite those incendiary remarks of the past. "After the election, it's time for everyone, united, to continue working for Brazil", he wrote on Twitter.

"This country needs a change", added Nascimento, a native of Fortaleza in northeastern Brazil, traditional bastion of the PT.

The far-right Alternative for Germany party's foreign affairs representative, Petr Bystron, heralded Bolsonaro as the leader of a conservative revolution and described him as an upstanding politician whom the media unfairly slandered.

The similarities between the presidents could usher in a new era of cooperation between the Western hemisphere's two largest countries on trade, as Trump tweeted, but also on the humanitarian and political crisis in Venezuela, countering drug trafficking, and pushing back against environmental regulations.

Working on the assumption that a Bolsonaro victory was impossible, the party decided its best shot to get to the second round - and thus to victory - was to rely heavily on its standard bearer, former President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, even though he began serving a 12-year sentence for corruption in April.

His opponent Mr Haddad had warned on Sunday that democracy and freedom were "at risk" in the election, echoing widespread fears that a Bolsonaro win would spell disaster for human rights and civil liberties.

The American right wing likes him-and he likes them.

Bolsonaro has always been a source of controversy in Brazil, appalling his many critics while energizing his base of supporters who admire what they see as his "straight talk".

Neto said he was troubled by Bolsonaro's comments a week ago that "red" leftists would be run out of Brazil. "Brazil has never needed the exercise of citizenship more than right now".

The political violence comes on top of a record 63,880 murders across the country in 2017, or 175 per day.

Bolsonaro is an outspoken admirer of Trump. Bolsonaro himself was stabbed and nearly died at a campaign event in early September.

The controversial right-wing presidential candidate nicknamed "Trump of the Tropics", Jair Bolsonaro, easily won Brazil's presidential election on Sunday, beating his Workers Party opponent Fernando Haddad by over ten points. He wants to increase gun ownership and has pledged to give police "carte blanche" to kill.

An outspoken admirer of U.S. President Donald Trump, Bolsonaro also pledged to realign Brazil with more advanced economies, overhauling diplomatic priorities after almost a decade and a half of leftist rule.

He once told a lawmaker he opposed that she "wasn't worth raping;" he has said he would rather see his sons die than come out as gay; and he commented after visiting one black community that they "do nothing - they're so useless I doubt they can procreate". "I think that constitutional Brazil, although imperfect (and) in need of improvement (and) adjustment, will likely prove resilient", said political analyst Paulo Sotero, the director of the Brazil Institute at the Wilson Center in Washington, D.C.

Mr. Witzel caused quite a stir upon reaching the runoff, defeating a host of traditional candidates, thanks to his connections with Jair Bolsonaro. Bolivian president Evo Morales saluted Brazilians themselves for "their democratic participation" and "extended Bolivia's acknowledgment" to the new president-elect.
