University of Utah student slain on campus; ex-boyfriend found dead

The mother of the University of Utah student shot and killed on campus Monday evening has released an inspirational video of her daughter running track in high school when she was being recruited for college, ahead of a planned vigil Wednesday evening.

According to the university, police received reports of an argument and gunshots outside an on-campus residence hall around 8:20 p.m. local time.

Lauren McCluskey, a student at the University of Utah, was gunned down on campus after she filed a police complaint against a man she was dating when she learned he was a sex offender.

Lauren's mother Jill McCluskey says Rowland lied about his criminal past to her daughter and that she told police he was harassing her.

Before attending the University of Utah, McCluskey had her pick of about five other schools, she told the Moscow-Pullman Daily News in 2014. Her mother said she was set to graduate in May and had a 3.75 grade-point average. "While university officials have released few details on the shooting, they did describe the suspect as a 37-year-old black man, weighing 250 lbs, 6'3" tall, and was wearing a gray beanie, black trousers, white shoes, and a white hoodie at the time of the incident.

Early Tuesday, Salt Lake City Police saw Rowland in downtown Salt Lake City and briefly chased him, Brophy said.

University of Utah student Jonas Woychick said he was playing pool when he got a message about an on-campus shooter.

McCluskey made her mark at as a track star at Pullman High School, where she eventually became a state champion in the high jump and school record-holder in the 100-meter-hurdle. Brown said Rowland slipped in to the back door of a church, where he was later found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot. He fatally shot himself at a Salt Lake City church in the early hours of Tuesday morning.

Describing the moment she met McCluskey five years ago and the relationship that blossomed between them, Weidle said they were "blessed" to have Lauren as a teammate and "sister".

The university sent out an emergency alert titled "shooting on campus". The man they are searching for and the student had "a previous relationship", Wahlin said. On October 10, McCluskey requested for University of Utah police to accompany her to get her vehicle back from Rowland. He said he was angry at University of Utah for what he said was a "negligent lack of follow-through" that lead to McCluskey's death.

The university announced on its Twitter account that a shooting took place shortly before 10 p.m.

The university says police are looking for the suspect. This tweet was followed by a suspect description: "Suspect: Black male, 37 years old, 6'3", 250 lbs, wearing a gray beanie, black trousers, white shoes and a white hoodie.
