Here are the winning numbers in the $1 billion Mega Millions drawing

The largest jackpot in United States lottery history - US$1.6 billion ($2.2 billion) - will be up for grabs during the next Mega Millions draw.

The winning numbers for Friday night's Mega Millions drawing are: 65, 53, 23, 15, 70 and Mega Ball 7.

The drawing for the second-largest lottery prize in USA history, a cool $1 billion, was held on Friday as lotto fever gripped the US.

The game, which was created in 2002, has seen changes over the years that have reduced the chances of winning, meaning bigger and bigger jackpots. There's another chance to become America's newest billionaire.

The estimated cash option for next drawing will be $905 million.

All we know so far is that there was one ticket in northern California that matched five out of six numbers, according to the California Lottery and ABC7.

Mega Millions is available in 44 states, including Florida, and in the District of Columbia and the U.S. Virgin Islands. If a victor is chosen, the federal government will automatically collect a 25 percent tax on the prize when it is issued.

Before and after images of Hurricane Michael destruction
Michael is now centered over SC and is still a tropical storm after a long land journey over the southeastern United States. A month after Hurricane Florence's epic deluge, SC officials are more concerned about tornadoes than flooding from Michael.

A single winning ticket would be eligible for a cash payout of $268.6 million.

A single victor could chose a one-time cash option of $565 million or an annuity that would be paid out over 29 years.

Their new-found lottery wealth would also put them above Barnes & Noble Inc and Red Robin Gourmet Burgers Inc, both worth under $500 million.

The $970 million jackpot is the largest Mega Millions jackpot ever.

The odds of winning any prize is one in 24, but the odds of winning the jackpot is one in 303 million. The probabilities are overwhelmingly not in your favor. Cornelius Nelan, a math professor at Quinnipiac University in CT, notes the odds are about the same as rolling a die and getting a one, 11 times in a row.

Tickets cost $2 unless you opt for the "Megaplier", which raises the price to $3. It creates this sense of camaraderie.
