Twitter Releases Details of Russian and Iranian Trolling

The datasets, which also include more than 2 million images, GIFs, videos and Periscope broadcasts, comprise 3,841 accounts affiliated with the Internet Research Agency (IRA), originating in Russian Federation, and 770 other accounts, potentially with origins in Iran.

Twitter added that the goal of the release was to make the data available for researchers and academics for investigation.

Their apparent mission was to flood American social media with controversial material to galvanize political hostilities ahead of the 2016 election.

Twitter has released a huge cache of pictures, videos and other information related to "potentially state-backed information operations" on the social network.

Experts say the tweet archive shows that both the Iranian and Russian operations started out as campaigns to support their governments at home.

Despite Democrats and the left framing President Donald Trump's election as a function of Russian "election hacking", political messaging across Twitter attributed the Russian state took varying positions on assorted political issues.

Turkey convicts USA pastor but lets him leave
A Turkish court has freed American pastor Andrew Brunson after two years in detention, according to Turkish state media. The evangelical pastor is accused of terror-related charges and espionage, facing up to 35 years in jail if convicted.

Twitter on Wednesday released a massive trove of data associated with foreign influence and misinformation campaigns spanning almost a decade - just three weeks before the USA midterm elections.

"The Iranian operation was clumsy". In January, the company said that it had notified around 1.4 million people that they had directly engaged with Russia-linked accounts during the 2016 presidential election or had actively followed those accounts at the time they were suspended. Another 770 accounts in the archive have been sourced to actors in Iran, who used the same tactics to spread misinformation.

From more than 4,500 suspect accounts, 3,841 came from Russian Federation and 770 from Iran.

A preliminary look at the data by Ars Technica revealed that a common tactic used by the IRA was to create "local news" accounts for major U.S. cities, seeding them with posts linking to local news outlets.

In August this year, Twitter also disclosed details of another attempted influence campaign it identified as potentially located within Iran.

The tweets made public by Twitter either insult or praise certain election candidates, activists and other influential targets or topics with charged rhetoric.
