Erdogan, Saudi king discuss case of missing journalist

Khashoggi hasn't been seen since he entered the Saudi consulate in Istanbul on October 2.

"Markets start to price in a fundamental change in the nature of the relationship between the United States and Saudi Arabia", said Jaap Meijer, managing director and head of equity research at Arqaam Capital.

"Since Saudi arms are being used to ravage Yemen and they are apparently complicit in the disappearance of Mr. Khashoggi, I can not support President Trump's proposed arms sale", Durbin said.

Branson, who dropped two directorships linked to Saudi tourism projects around the Red Sea, said claims about Khashoggi's disappearance would "change the ability of any of us in the West to do business with the Saudi government". Censure of any kind would be met with "greater action" from Riyadh, it added, pointing out Saudi Arabia's "vital role" in the world economy.

Khashoggi, a Washington Post columnist and Saudi dissident, has not been seen since he entered the Saudi Arabian consulate in Istanbul on October 2 to get documentation he needed in order to marry his fiancée.

President Donald Trump initially made it clear that whatever the outcome of the inquiry into the disappearance of Khashoggi, the U.S. would not forgo billions of dollars in arms deals with Saudi Arabia.

Media reports say Khashoggi may have recorded his own death on his Apple Watch. The kingdom has called such allegations "baseless" but has not offered any evidence Khashoggi ever left the consulate. The kingdom's Tadawul All-Shares Index later clawed back some losses to close down 3.5 percent.

Before Saturday's comments, Trump had been reluctant to criticise Saudi Arabia and had said on Thursday that he was against cancelling the $110-billion US-Saudi arms deal over the journalist's disappearance.

Doubts are also growing over whether British Trade Secretary Liam Fox will attend the Riyadh conference, the BBC reported Sunday citing diplomatic sources.

"We can not have an ally who murders in cold blood in their own consulate", said Mr. Sanders.

Saudi Arabia reiterated its total rejection of any threats and attempts to undermine it, saying the Kingdom would retaliate against any sanctions with tougher measures, an official source said in a statement carried by Saudi Press Agency on Sunday.

The king phoned Erdogan "to thank the president for welcoming the kingdom's proposal to form a joint working group to discuss the disappearance of Saudi citizen Jamal Khashoggi". "At this point, Saudi Arabia will find it incredibly challenging to contain the emerging crisis".

Rubio tells CBS' "Face the Nation" that "we can never be a voice for human rights anywhere in the world if we allow a situation like this to go forward and us do nothing about it".

The admonitions of the United States emanating from Saudi Arabia "bring into question the essential pillars that underpin U.S. -Saudi relations", said Kristin Diwan, a scholar at the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.
