North Korea's Kim Jong Un would 'ardently welcome' visit by Pope Francis

Kim Jong Un has invited Pope Francis to Pyongyang, and has said he would "warmly welcome" him to North Korea in what would be a historic visit to the country by the head of the Roman Catholic Church.

"I hope your trip to North Korea and the upcoming second US-North Korea summit will provide a good opportunity for achieving irreversible, decisive progress in terms of denuclearisation and the peace process on the Korean peninsula".

"Today's friendly match will be a display of top basketball skills and the great sportsmanship of all the players from both of our countries", Kim Il Guk, the North Korean minister of sports, said before the game began.

Speaking to reporters en route to Japan, Pompeo said the plan was to "develop options for both location and timing" for a second summit, although he doubted they would "get it nailed" down mostly due to scheduling and logistics issues.

In response, Pompeo said the two countries have a "fundamental disagreement".

The Secretary of State added that South Korea has been an integral part of negotiations aimed at denuclearising North Korea, and he passed along Mr Trump's gratitude for the country's efforts.

Donald Trump said Tuesday that he will have a second summit with North Korean dictator Kim Kim Jong-un - and it could happen at his private Mar-a-Lago resort club in Florida.

The doveish Moon, who will attend a "peace Mass" for the Korean peninsula in Saint Peter's on October 17, has pushed rapprochement with Kim, meeting him three times in the a year ago.

Pompeo told journalists in Seoul that the leader had agreed to open up the Punggye-ri nuclear testing site to inspectors.

North Korean state media KCNA said: "Kim Jong-un expressed satisfaction over the productive and wonderful talks with Mike Pompeo at which mutual stands were fully understood and opinions exchanged".

The trade war between China and the U.S. is however being seen as a barrier to co-operation in the North Korean crisis. We continue to make progress on agreements made at Singapore Summit.

"While the USA side has constantly escalated trade frictions with China, it has also taken actions regarding Taiwan that harm China's core interests", Wang said.

Moon also spoke positively of Pompeo's latest meeting with Kim. The North has rejected that and South Korea has suggested it may not be a necessary next step.

South Korean President Moon Jae-in said Monday that he believed Kim would soon meet with the leaders of China and Russian Federation "soon" as a "new order is being created on the Korean peninsula".

After spending about five hours in Beijing, Pompeo headed for the airport to return to Washington.

Two of the five people on the American side of the meeting table dealt with North Korea - new special representative for North Korea Stephen Biegun and National Security Council adviser Allison Hooker - reflecting Pompeo's desired focus.

Last week, U.S. Vice President Mike Pence made a series of allegations, including accusing Beijing of attempting to interfere with the November congressional elections. When Pope Francis visited South Korea in 2014, he held a mass in Seoul dedicated to reunification of the two Koreas.

Trump said "eventually we're going to have lots of meetings on USA soil and on their soil by the way".
