Why you will receive a presidential text message today

If you happen to be watching television or listening to the radio around that time, you'll also see this alert broadcast out over the Emergency Alert System (EAS). "No action is needed", the full text will read.

This is a test of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System.

Trump's message was initially planned for September 20 but was postponed due to Hurricane Florence.

This will be the fourth nationwide test of the EAS after similar tests in 2011, 2016, and 2017. Along with that tone, you'll get some text which says: "THIS IS A TEST of the National Wireless Emergency Alert System".

The new message will look like the others that the WEA the emergency alerts sent out to phone owners in regions facing severe inclement weather or abducted children (aka Amber Alerts). This is the first national WEA test.

"Trump Derangement Syndrome" is real and has manifested itself in many loony ways in the President's opponents over the past few years.

As technology advanced in the late 1990s, so did the need to upgrade the nation's alert system, which in 1997 became the Emergency Alert System (EAS).

A number of iPhone users on AT&T's network - including this reporter - did not receive the notification until they had rebooted their smartphones.

Senate panel receives new Kavanaugh allegations
It shows that Christine Blasey Ford's allegation against Judge Brett Kavanaugh is confirmed, except that it doesn't. She said she shared details of the incident with two additional people shortly after the sexual assault took place.

Here's the kicker - the subject of the alert will read: "Presidential Alert".

Some are describing the test as a "Trump Alert" - but the United States president is not personally involved in the trial.

Still, senior FEMA officials estimate that only about 75 percent of U.S. cell phones will actually receive today's alert.

Other reactions to the alert on social media varied, with many Trump critics venting their rage. "No action is required".

Still, a group of New Yorkers is suing in federal court saying they can't be forced to receive the alerts because they violate their right to free speech.

It is unknown if Trump will attempt to misuse this power as a political tool to make announcements. Users can opt out of "emergency alerts" which means there's a way out in case they don't want to be notified in case of an emergency (but, it would be surprising if anybody would do that).

If you're in range, though, you're getting the alert whether you like it or not.

Unlike the Amber and weather alerts, the presidential alert can't be turned off.
