Rosenstein, expecting to be fired, heads to White House

His exit comes after a bombshell report in the New York Times Friday about memos written by former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe recounting Rosenstein previous year suggesting the invocation of the 25th Amendment, and he would wear a wire with the President.

According to Reuters, Rosenstein's replacement, by way of legal succession, "would fall to Solicitor General Noel Francisco, according to an internal Justice Department memo on succession from November 2016 that is still in effect". Rosenstein strongly denied the report.

Other sources in the room briefed on the remarks were under the impression that Rosenstein was being serious and that spinning the comments as a joke is part of an effort to save Rosenstein's job.

Before named by Trump to serve as the No. 2 to Attorney General Jeff Sessions, Rosenstein served as the U.S. Attorney for the District of Maryland.

"The New York Times's story is inaccurate and factually incorrect", Rosenstein said in an earlier statement.

According to reports, senior Republicans have convinced a furious Mr Trump not to axe Mr Rosenstein, at least until the midterms are over for fear of negative blowback from voters. But let me clear about this: "Based on my personal dealings with the president, there is no basis to invoke the 25th Amendment". The president described the search as "an attack on our country".

A Justice Department spokesperson conceded that Rosenstein did discuss secretly taping the president but presented an anonymous source who told the Times that he did so in a sarcastic manner.

While Sessions has taken the brunt of Trump's public anti-Mueller anger, Rosenstein continued to be targeted by Trump's allies. As for Rosenstein's future, Trump says, "We will make a determination".
