NASA Releases Footage Of Hurricane Florence And Her 'Mike Tyson Punch'

And that's just the prelude to untold days of misery.

While many coastal residents heeded mandatory evacuation orders, others boarded up homes and businesses and chose to fearless the storm, which is forecast to trigger severe flash flooding as it dumps as many as three feet (almost a meter) of rain in some areas.

A high-definition video camera outside the space station captured stark and sobering views of Hurricane Florence, at that time a Category 4 storm. Categories only represent the speed of sustained winds, and these are still destructive.

"It's going to be bad", said Woody White, chairman of the New Hanover County Commissioners.

Scientists hypothesize that a warmer world will bring slower storms, so what we saw last year with Harvey - and now this year with Florence - could be a sign of those changes.

On Wednesday morning, the storm was about 550 miles from the Carolina coast and remains a Category 4 storm with 130 mph winds.

According to Ryan Maue, a meterologist at weather.us, around 10 trillion gallons of water may be dumped on the area, which may lead to rivers overflowing and causing life-threatening floods. That's enough to fill more than 15 million Olympic-size swimming pools.

Florence, however, continues to threaten the east coast as a fierce storm that could trigger flooding as far south as Georgia.

Lawmakers express faith in federal preparedness, brace for Hurricane Florence
The worst of the storm is expected to hit the United States in the early hours of Friday, with swells as high as 12ft forecast. A storm with sustained winds of at least 111 miles per hour classifies as a Category 3 major hurricane , according to the NHC.

Bob Woodward reveals what shocked him most in new Trump book
Just a day earlier, The Washington Post published excerpts from an upcoming book by famed Watergate reporter, Bob Woodward .

"It's cumulative damage", Myers said. "I mean this takes a long time to move through the Carolinas". Fallen trees and power poles will isolate residential areas. "Once these winds start blowing at that tropical storm rate, it will be virtually impossible for the rescuers to get in to rescue you". REUTERS/Carlo AllegriDennis Kernodle talks on the phone during storm preparations of his oceanfront home ahead of the arrival of Hurricane Florence in Ocean Isle Beach, North Carolina, U.S. September 12, 2018.

The National Hurricane Center's best guess was that Florence would blow ashore as early as Friday afternoon around the North Carolina-South Carolina line, then slog its rainy way westward with a potential for catastrophic inland flooding that could swamp homes, businesses and farm fields.

The downgraded status of the storm, which indicates that Hurricane Florence is moving at maximum sustained wind speeds of 110 miles per hour, means little in terms of its impact and deadly potential, according to Elliot Abrams, chief forecaster at Accuweather.

FEMA has warned that while downgraded, the storm will still generate life threatening storm surge and rainfall in North and SC.

The National Weather Service forecasts sunny skies and temperatures in the mid-80s this weekend, with the exception of lakefront areas, which are predicted to reach the high 70s.

"You need to get out now", Hill told those who were staying behind. Parts of North Carolina could get 40 inches (1 meter) of rain.

The zone where these intense winds occur will be narrow and they will last just a few hours, but the effects will probably be severe, similar to a tornado. The town is less than 5 feet above sea level and officials worry that as many as 1,000 of the town's 6,300 residents are planning to stay.

"As soon as a storm is about to hit, all traffic stops in and out of the area until the storm calms down and the roads are clear", she says.
