Athens prepares for Hurricane Florence, statewide emergency declared

While some weakening is expected on Thursday, Florence is forecast to be an extremely risky major hurricane when it nears the U.S. coast.

The storm is expected to slow down as it approaches the North Carolina-South Carolina coast, which makes landfall timing less certain, according to the National Weather Service.

Hurricane Florence is expected to bring high winds to North Carolina's coast by Thursday afternoon.

Experts are saying Florence, a "monster", could be one of the most powerful storms to ever hit the East Coast.

"I'm scared we'll get 30 inches or more of rain", said Carol Trojniar, 69, a longtime Wilmington resident and retired real estate agent who has never experienced a Category 4 hurricane.

While one man concluded: 'We are about to get pounded, but since we have absolutely no control over it, all you can do is laugh, and pray for the best'.

"This is a very fluid situation, especially now that new model runs are shifting the course of the storm south after landfall, potentially increasing its impact on SC and Georgia", St. Mary's Hospital spokesman Mark Ralston said. It will be more tropical depression at that point.

While some said they planned to stay put despite hurricane watches and warnings that include the homes of more than 5.4 million people on the East Coast, many weren't taking any chances.

Even Wilmington, North Carolina - a coastal city accustomed to severe weather - is bracing for an unusually brutal impact.

He warned residents to take precautions "because once this storm is upon us, we're not going to be able to send emergency personnel out to rescue you". Catastrophic floods could follow if the storm stalls inland, it said.

The National Hurricane Center says the waves were measured by satellite. "Now it might be time for the exam", Baxley said late in the morning. "Don't panic, people just need to prepare, just in case".

The National Weather Service says nearly half of all deaths from tropical cyclones come from storm surge.

The Federal Emergency Management Agency warned that storm surge watches and warnings are in effect for the entire North Carolina coast and parts of SC. A storm surge warning went into effect for the same areas, as well as the Neuse and Pamlico Rivers. "So you have ten feet of water coming in from the ocean". "It's going to destroy homes", said Jeff Byard, an official at the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

"Inland flooding will be a major threat and something people far from the landfall location should be concerned about", CNN's Miller said.

"Warming oceans, a more rapidly warming arctic, melting ice sheets are all contributing in various way to conditions like what we're observing now", Francis said.
