Twin girls and three-year-old sister among five found dead in Perth home

The man, said to be in his 20s, is in custody and undergoing questioning.

Shocked neighbours said police arrived at the home on Coode Street just after 11am.

Police refused to say what the man told them - or how he was known to the victims.

When police entered, they discovered the bodies of two women and three young children.

Neighbour Desrae Cambos said the family, which seemed close-knit, had lived at the house for about four years with the father running a lawn-mowing and landscaping business.

Forensic police officers inspect a property in Bedford, Perth after five bodies were discovered at the home.

'The scene has not yet been forensically examined so the exact number of adults and children is actually unknown to me'.

Neighbour Vagner de Souza said he regularly saw a family outside the house where the bodies were found.

Homicide detectives and specialist forensic police will comb the address in the suburb of Bedford for evidence and clues to what happened.

The incident marks the third tragic event in recent months in Western Australia.

The age and gender of those found has not yet been revealed, although it is thought "there was at least one woman".

It was the worst mass shooting in Australia since the Port Arthur massacre in 1996, when 35 people were shot dead in Tasmania.

When officers went to the house, they found Michelle Petersen and her son, Rua, dead, and her daughter Bella in a critical condition.
