Novak Djokovic Wins the U.S. Open

A clinical Novak Djokovic dismissed Juan Martin Del Potro 6-3 7-6 (4) 6-3 to collect his third U.S. Open title on Sunday, giving him 14 Grand Slams to move into a tie for third on the all-time list alongside Pete Sampras.

Djokovic outlasted del Potro to win 6-3, 7-6, 6-3, and although a straight sets win might seem uncomplicated, del Potro had a number of chances, especially in the second set when he had three break points while leading 4-3, in a game that lasted more than 20 minutes.

Djokovic, playing in his eighth final in NY and already the champion in 2011 and 2015, is now just three Slams behind Rafael Nadal and six back from the record 20 held by Roger Federer.

It was only the second set dropped by the Argentine at the tournament.

It was Djokovic's 15th win over the Argentine and fifth in five at the Slams.

"I was hoping he's going to be here tonight but I want to say 'Pete, I love you, you're my idol, '" said the Serb.

Dominic Carlucci drove back to his home on the barrier island in his Hummer, and found no damage, just a sagging wooden fence. The heaviest rain from Gordon will be from the northern Gulf Coast to parts of Arkansas, and will last through Thursday .

When Djokovic is at his best, few can match him and after this win, only two men in Open Era history have held more major titles. It will be Djokovic's second back-to-back final after winning the Wimbledon in July after returning from injury. But when Djokovic faced three break points in the following game, an epic that required 22 points to settle, he saved them all.

The effort took its toll on a suddenly weary-looking Del Potro as a 95-minute set was claimed by Djokovic in the tiebreak.

There's no doubting which of the singles finals at the US Open will be remembered more, but Novak Djokovic's achievements on Sunday night were certainly historic.

Both men had one grand-slam title to their name, but for some Del Potro looked the safer bet.

As for an emotional Del Potro, who was back in a Grand Slam final for the first time since he won his only title at Flushing Meadows in 2009, he was at least rightly proud of hauling himself back to the top of the game after a spate of awful injuries.

Del Potro was looking at having to become the first man since Pancho Gonales in 1949 to win the U.S. title from two sets down.
