Facebook Watch opens to everyone worldwide

The social network's "Watch" feature, a section on its app, is created to take on YouTube directly since it will serve as a dedicated home for videos on Facebook, instead of them being interspersed them with status updates and other posts on the Facebook homepage.

Facebook has begun rolling out its "Watch" video service - that was launched past year and available only in the United States.

Matthew Henick, Facebook's head of content planning, strategy and media partnerships, said that localised programming with subtitles will become available on the platform as Watch is rolled out globally. It is also a collection of recent videos from subscribed pages while users can save the videos from their News feed and watch later. That might seem a little stingy at first, but Facebook Watch potentially gives them access to an audience some 1.5 billion-strong.

"Every month, more than 50 million people in the U.S. come to watch videos for at least a minute in Watch - and total time spent watching videos in Watch has increased by 14x since the start of 2018".

This would help in two critical areas - helping them generate money through their videos on Facebook and to gauge performance of their content on the platform.

Among other things, this announcement represents a major step up in Facebook's crusade against YouTube and in its attempt to capture some of the creators and video consumption that as of now flows to the better-known Google-owned video platform.

However, keep spam-refreshing the Facebook Watch URL if you fancy finding out what it's about. The company is also rolling out its Creator Studio globally, the video management tool that includes video performance metrics. Users will also have the option to customize their Watch section by following more Pages or removing Pages from their follow list within Watch.

"We designed the product not just in a mindless consumption but in order to get people engaged", said Fidji Simo, Facebook's vice president for video.
