NYU medical school to cover tuition costs for all students

"The scholarships will also be established, from here on out, to every future medical student at the school", NYU stated in a press release. Medical students from NYU typically graduate with an average debt of $184,000, with the median debt for medical students across the nation totaling $192,000.

The NYU School of Medicine is the first top 10-ranked medical school to make tuition free, the school said. And some aspiring doctors may abandon the career path altogether, or not even consider medicine in the first place.

NYU is the first top-ranked medical school to go entirely tuition-free, although there is a similar, merit-based tuition waiver program at UCLA's David Geffen School of Medicine.

Medical schools across the US have attempted to respond to the student debt crisis by increasing their fundraising efforts to recruit competitive applicants, reduce student debt, and give graduates more flexibility with their career paths. One thing is for certain: It just became even harder to get into NYU. The average grant NYU gives incoming freshmen who receive aid has also more than tripled over that period-from approximately $8,900 to over $30,000.

Overwhelming student debt is fundamentally reshaping the medical profession in ways that are adversely affecting healthcare.

Jordan Spieth loses his cool at PGA Championship
He was at 3-over par for the second round through nine holes and 4 over for the tournament, putting him in a tie for 111th. But Brooks Koepka proved too much, rolling off birdies late to snatch the PGA Championship for his third major.

The decision by NYU to provide free tuition to all of its students may cause ripples well beyond a four-block stretch along the East River. However, she said some students feel pressure to to only pursue high-paying medical jobs due to their debt.

When graduating doctors are buried under student debt, they tent to school higher-paying specialties, NYU Medical School officials say, which takes talented doctors away from "less lucrative fields like primary care, pediatrics, and obstetrics and gynecology".

Seventy-five percent of doctors in the US graduated with debt, according to the Association of American Medical Colleges, and the median current debt of a graduating student is $202,000.

"This is going to be a huge game-changer for us, for our students and for our patients", Rafael Rivera, MD, associate dean for admission and financial aid, told WSJ.

Students must still however cover the cost of living expenses and accommodation. Faced with the longstanding threat, AAMC began pushing for higher medical school enrollment in the early 2000s. "What's more, 21 percent of doctors graduating from a private school do so with more than $300,000 of educational debt", the release said. "I think a lot of schools would love to be able to do this, but it's more hard for some schools".
