Expected star witness may not testify in Trump ex-aide Manafort's trial

Mueller was appointed by the U.S. Justice Department's No. 2 official past year to take over an FBI investigation into Russia's role in the 2016 presidential election and whether there was unlawful coordination between Trump's campaign and Moscow.

Mueller's team said it would not present evidence at the trial in the Washington suburb of Alexandria, Virginia, about possible campaign collusion with Russian Federation, potentially saving it for a second Manafort trial in Washington in September.

Trump has called Mueller's investigation into Russian meddling, which includes potential collusion between Trump's campaign and the Kremlin, a "witch hunt".

Prosecutor Uzo Asonye, a member of Mueller's team, said of Manafort: "A man in this courtroom believed the law did not apply to him".

This courtroom sketch depicts Paul Manafort, fourth from right, standing with his lawyers in front of USA district Judge T.S Ellis III, center rear, and the selected jury, seated left, during the jury selection of his trial at the Alexandria Federal Courthouse in Alexandria, Va., Tuesday, July 31, 2018.

In a filing Monday, prosecutors responded that those details are necessary to prove how much money Manafort made and did not pay taxes on; that he knew he was paid through unreported foreign bank accounts; and that in 2014, he began committing bank fraud to make up for lost income from Ukraine. He has also put distance between himself and Mr Manafort's charges, saying in a tweet: "This is years ago, before Paul Manafort was part of the Trump campaign".

The charges all came about through the special counsel investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 United States presidential election, led by former FBI chief Robert Mueller.

Central to the government's case are allegations that Manafort funneled more than $60 million in proceeds from his Ukrainian political consulting through offshore accounts, including in Cyprus, and hid a "significant" portion of it from the IRS.

Paul Manafort on Tuesday will become the first of President Donald Trump's former aides to go on trial, accused of bank and tax fraud by federal investigators probing Russian meddling in the 2016 US presidential election.

The allegations came during opening statements Tuesday in the Paul Manafort trial.

Among the new accounts were one called " Resisters " which promoted a fake anti-right wing protest in August in Washington D.C. The participants include the " Aztlan Warriors ", "Black Elevation", "Mindful Being", and " Resisters " pages.

The comments were the first volley in the bank fraud and tax evasion trial.

"It's not the American way", the judge said.

About 500 pieces of evidence have been submitted by investigators, including luxury watches and pictures of lavish homes, and up to 35 witnesses could be called.

"Rick Gates had his hands in the cookie jar and he didn't want his boss to find out", defense lawyer Thomas Zehnle told the court during his opening statement on Tuesday, accusing Gates of being "willing to say anything to save himself".

Asonye told Ellis Wednesday afternoon that prosecutors could rest their case as early as next week.

A three-judge panel said there was no clear error in the lower court's decision, noting that he "went right past the line with the alleged witness tampering".

But Manafort's connection to the Trump campaign, which he managed for five months in 2016, has filled the courtroom with reporters and the internet with readers. Mr Manafort denies all charges, and at one point had sought to get them dismissed.

Prosecutors have said they would not present evidence of collusion at this trial.

His trial is expected to be lengthy. So far, 32 people and three companies have been charged by Mr Mueller.

The remaining 31 individuals charged have either reached plea agreements, including ex-White House national security adviser Michael Flynn, or are Russians seen as unlikely to enter an American courtroom.
