Trump says DNC "should be ashamed of themselves" for getting hacked

Former US intelligence chiefs expressed astonishment and condemnation Monday in response to President Donald Trump's comments at Monday's news conference with Russian President Vladimir Putin, with former CIA Director John Brennan calling the US President's performance "nothing short of treasonous".

Speaking to CBS News ahead of the Putin meeting, Mr Trump said: "I think the European Union is a foe, what they do to us in trade ... you wouldn't think of the European Union, but they're a foe".

Putin's plane touched down in Helsinki 30 minutes later than planned on Monday, pushing back the start of his one-on-one talks with Trump.

Trump also took time out to congratulated Putin on hosting a successful World Cup tournament.

During their meeting, Putin and Trump discussed a host of issues, including Moscow's alleged meddling in the 2016 US election, nuclear non-proliferation and Syria.

"I think we have great opportunities together". I think hopefully we can do something about that because it's not a positive force it's a negative force.

Donald Trump wrote on his Twitter account. Trump himself sounded sympathetic to the Russian position, saying: "I don't see any reason why Russia would interfere in the 2016 election".

Putin summit to disrupt traffic, public transport in Helsinki and Vantaa
Mr Huntsman said the meeting will go on, arguing that some global issues can't be solved without Russian engagement. Bolton said that would be impossible since the United States has no extradition treaty with Russian Federation .

Steven Hall, the former head of the CIA's operations in Moscow, also told All Things Considered, "The first thing that came into my mind was, 'Good Lord, how could this be happening?' This was so far off, and just so bad that I was really astounded and speechless".

"We have two thoughts", Trump said.

Hours before the Helsinki summit, Trump was asked if he would press Putin over Russia's alleged manipulation of the 2016 election that brought the mercurial property tycoon to power.

"Our relationship with Russian Federation has NEVER been worse thanks to many years of USA foolishness and stupidity and now, the Rigged Witch Hunt!" wrote Trump on Twitter, referring to the investigation into possible collusion.

"We've worked with Israel for many decades and never has any country been closer than we are", said Trump.

While Trump has been overseas since last week, the special prosecutor investigating allegations that Russia interfered to help him win the 2016 presidential election indicted 12 Russians on Friday for stealing Democratic Party documents.

Russia's ministry of foreign affairs liked the tweet in a sign of its approval for Trump's messaging. "There is no clear agenda".

Trump tweeted Sunday that he believes no matter well how the summit with Putin goes, he'll face criticism from Democrats and the media.
