Trump Expected to Unveil Supreme Court Nominee Monday Night

President Trump's choice of Brett Kavanaugh to replace retiring Supreme Court Justice Anthony Kennedy is a replay of Neil Gorsuch's nomination to the Court previous year, right down to the Apprentice type reveal.

Kavanaugh earned a reputation as a hard worker during clerkships for two appeals court judges and then for Justice Anthony M. Kennedy, a conservative whom he would replace on the Supreme Court, if confirmed.

Trump planned to announce his pick Monday night.

Kavanaugh's nomination was met overall with cheers from conservatives but it wasn't unanimous.

The 53-year-old Kavanaugh has sat on the Court of Appeals District of Columbia Circuit since 2006. Kavanaugh later worked with independent counsel Kenneth Starr during the investigation of President Bill Clinton.

It will be one of the most consequential decisions President Trump makes during his time in the White House, and he will announce it tonight.

In Kavanaugh's view, the D.C. Circuit should have been guided by the Anti-Injunction Act, an 1867 law that says, "no suit for the objective of restraining the assessment or collection of any tax shall be maintained in any court".

On Monday, Trump phoned retiring Justice Kennedy to inform him that his former law clerk would be nominated to fill his seat.

His nomination and long paper trail could mean contentious hearings in the Senate similar to his 2003 nomination. But his supporters have cited his experience and wide range of legal opinions. Ms Coulter challenged Democrats on the issue ahead of the midterm elections in November. Senate Republicans hold only a 51-49 majority, leaving them hardly any margin if Democrats hold the line.

He said the agency is also attempting to verify that parents do not have a background that make them inappropriate caretakers. The government asked the judge for "clarification" about how strictly it must adhere to both its policies and the deadlines.

Democrats and liberal advocacy groups quickly lined up in opposition. Although Trump said he would not ask judicial candidates about their views on Roe directly, advocates on both sides of the abortion debate believe that ruling could be vulnerable once Kennedy's successor is seated. Jon Tester of Montana - told reporters on Monday that he was not invited to the White House for Monday's ceremony, but added he's open to voting to one of the nominees.

Indiana's Donnelly and Democratic Sens.

As promised, Trump made his pick from a list of more than two dozen potential nominees drawn up with the help from conservative legal activists at The Federalist Society and The Heritage Foundation. At the top of that list is abortion.

Democrats who plan to oppose Trump's nominee are focusing on two Republican moderates, Susan Collins of ME and Lisa Murkowski of Alaska, hoping to turn them against Trump's selection. CBS News reported that Judge Thomas Hardiman, who was the runner-up to Neil Gorsuch, was also a finalist. Kennedy provided a decisive vote in 2015 on an important fair housing case. Another former Kennedy clerk, Kethledge is known for his strong defense of the Second Amendment. Dick Durbin once called the "Forrest Gump of Republican politics", later served as partner at the law firm Kirkland & Ellis in Washington, DC, and served as senior associate counsel, associate counsel, assistant to the president, and staff secretary to former President George W. Bush. The opinion, written for a three-judge panel, was eventually overturned by the full court.

Kavanaugh's record could draw support among moderates during his confirmation hearings, but it could also invite criticism from other factions of Congress.

Kavanaugh's time in Bush administrations, for example, could count against him with a President who is suspicious of the political establishment. Kavanaugh argued that the employees couldn't vote due to their immigration status.

Judge Kavanaugh recently voiced disagreement with a court decision allowing an undocumented teenage immigrant to have an abortion. "But this is really about the process and whether or not the corporate right is going to be in charge of picking the Supreme Court in a seat, in a nomination that's likely to tip the scales substantially".

Republican Senator John McCain, key to a Republican "yes" vote, endorsed the new nominee. Kennedy, a member of the Judiciary Committee, which will get the first chance to question the nominee, predicted a "rough, tough, down in the dirt, ear-pulling, nose-biting fight".

Cong. Adam Schiff pointed out the president picked someone who doesn't believe the president should be subject to criminal investigations. Republicans meanwhile are lobbying the White House on behalf of their preferred candidate.
