Will Portugal, Spain both advance to last 16 on Monday?

After an entirely meaningless early slate of World Cup action Monday, we were treated to a thrilling pair of games that reminded us, once again, why this is the most popular sporting event on the planet.

After taking a single point from their first two matches in Group D, Lionel Messi and his side need to produce something special against Nigeria to stay in the tournament.

For the teams who have qualified, the focus now is on topping the group, which could determine a lot in their World Cup title hopes.

Spain will now take on hosts Russian Federation, who finished second in Group A, in the round of 16 on Saturday while Portugal will face Group A winners Uruguay on Sunday.

Ansarifard converted the resulting penalty to level the score, pushing Portugal to second position in the group behind Spain. Saudi Arabia and Egypt, both of whom had already been mathematically eliminated, played each other in a similarly meaningless match.

Group E and Group H are both in a three-country race.

Ricardo Quaresma scored a gorgeous three-toe curler in the first half, Cristiano Ronaldo had a penalty kick saved and Iran made a penalty of its own before almost winning the match at the end. Australia, with just one point, can still qualify with a win over Peru and with a Denmark loss.

Switzerland advances with a win or a draw against Costa Rica.

Brazil held 1-1 by Switzerland

Brazil would be safely through with a win or a draw against Serbia and will top the group unless Switzerland better their result, or match it with a better goal margin - the Selecao's goal difference is now one better. Goals scored is the next criteria, followed by the head-to-head record of the tied teams.

Senegal and Colombia play off with the victor qualifying, while a draw will be enough for the African side. And if it is still a tie, Federation Internationale de Football Association will draw lots. A point would be enough if Iceland do not beat Croatia. Entering the final matchday, Group B has yet to produce a definitive knockout stage representative. A draw would see Russian Federation top on goal difference.

Tite's men are through if they get at least a point against Serbia in Moscow on Wednesday. If the Swiss lose, they would still advance if Brazil beats Serbia.

In the 81st minute, with both teams having chances, Youssef En Nesyri headed home from a corner for the late lead. A half hour later, Portugal went ahead with a lovely goal from Ricardo Quaresma. He has scored all of their four goals, including a hat-trick in the 3-3 draw against Spain.

Group victor plays runner-up in Group C. Runner-up plays Group C victor.

It will be the first group to be decided and as such, the two sides will not know who they will face until 22:00 CET when Group B will have played their final games.

"But we have a backup group pushing for places every day". England now have one fewer.

Both of these sides are already through to the knockout stages. The Danes would top the group with victory.
