Donald Trump breaches protocol by awkwardly saluting North Korean general

In the wake of a historic summit between President Donald Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, North Korean media has started lavishing praise on the U.S. President.

Tough sanctions against North Korea will remain in place until its complete denuclearisation, the USA secretary of state, Mike Pompeo, has said, apparently contradicting North Korea's view that the process agreed at this week's summit would be phased and reciprocal.

The declaration signed at the end of the summit said the two countries would co-operate towards "new relations", while the U.S. would provide "security guarantees" to North Korea.

Senator Chris Van Hollen, also a Democrat, said of Trump's tweet about North Korea no longer presenting a threat: "This is truly delusional".

Trump and Kim held meetings on Singapore's resort island of Sentosa Tuesday, followed by a joint statement in which the United States was committed to providing security guarantees to the DPRK in exchange for Pyongyang's commitment to a complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. The next joint military drill with South Korea, scheduled for this fall, would be Ulchi Freedom Guardian.

Trump said he had urged Kim and other North Korean officials to watch a four-minute video produced ahead of Tuesday's summit in Singapore.

But details on what form those promises would take were sparse, with critics noting the lack of a timeline for when North Korea will begin dismantling its nuclear programme.

"I will face (North Korea) directly and work toward resolving the abduction issue", he told the families.

He characterized them as 'very expensive, ' however, and portrayed their end as an economic decision rather than a negotiated concession that the USA had previously said it wouldn't budge on.

Trump said the world is "safer" following the summit with Kim.

"We believe that Kim Jong Un understands the urgency. that we must do this quickly", he said of the effort to have North Korea abandon its atomic arsenal.

In the military, returning a salute from a military officer of a friendly foreign nation is common practice for USA military officers and considered a display of military professionalism.

Pompeo also stressed that there will be no lifting of sanctions, or any kind of economic benefits given to North Korea, . before its complete denuclearization.

North Korean state media reported on Wednesday that Kim and Trump had recognised the principle of "step-by-step and simultaneous action" to achieve peace and denuclearisation. Apparently, it's a thing to make your own Hollywood-style trailer for the dictator you are meeting at a historic summit if you are the president of the United States. "North Korea has great potential for the future!" The president's latest comments are in stark contrast to his threats to unleash "fire and fury" past year in response to Pyongyang's nuclear and long-range missile tests.

Pyongyang's nuclear weapons program will come to an end, he asserted, claiming that Kim had already left Singapore and was "on his way back" to North Korea to begin implementing their joint vows.

A US official told AFP that "major military exercises have been suspended indefinitely on the Korean peninsula".
