Facebook made some private posts public for as many as 14M users

However, between 18 and 22 May this year, the bug would set posts to "public" even if the user had, in the previous post, chosen something more private.

Facebook hasn't released specifics on the amount of users and posts involved other than it being up to 14 million.

'We'd like to apologize for this mistake, ' she added.

Facebook said it had reverted the audience settings to users' prior preference. These items are visible to the public, however, the company extended that setting to all the new posts, TechCrunch reports.

During the month of May, social media users may have been posting the posts publicly and not even realizing it thanks to another Facebook screw-up. It happened when the platform started building a "featured items" section in profiles for users to highlight content of their choosing.

The mishap comes on the tail of several privacy scandals involving the social network in recent months.

A Facebook booth is seen at the China International Big Data Industry Expo in Guiyang, Guizhou province, China, on May 27, 2018.

Facebook confirmed earlier this week that China-based Huawei - which has been banned by the U.S. military and is a lightning rod for cyberespionage concerns - was among device makers authorized to see user data in agreements that had been in place for years.

That meant that if the user did not notice the setting had changed, they may have posted something publicly that was not meant to be seen by a wider group of people, for example a new mobile phone number or address.

The company profited from a feature that meant apps could ask for permission to access your own data as well as the data of all your Facebook friends.

Facebook is embroiled in a snafu that exposed users' private postings and made them public, the company admitted Thursday.
