Ariya vaults into lead at US Women's Open

Sarah Jane Smith extended her lead at the U.S. Women's Open to four strokes after a second straight 5-under 67 Friday at Shoal Creek.

Kim then got another huge putt to drop at the 15th which got her within one of the long-time leader, but Jutanugarn regained her composure to knock a precise tee shot in close at the short 16th which lifted her spirits heading to the final two holes.

Jutanugarn fired a one-over 73 at the Shoal Creek Golf and Country Club in Alabama to finish at 11 under, with Kim (67) joining her.

She righted the ship in the playoff, which went to a sudden-death format after the two-hole aggregate start failed to produce a victor.

On the second extra hole, No. 18, Jutanugarn produced another par while Kim made a bogey. Jutanugarn, already a nine-time victor on the LPGA Tour and the 2016 British Open champion, appeared under no pressure whatsoever when beginning her final nine holes.

Ariya turned a three-shot deficit into a big advantage in her quest for a second major title as she looks to break the recent dominance at the championship by South Korean and American players, who have claimed the past 11 titles.

DUBLIN, Ohio - Bryson DeChambeau finished off a 6-under 66 with birdies on two of the toughest holes, giving him a one-shot lead going into a final round at a Memorial that features Tiger Woods in the mix at Muirfield Village for the first time in six years. "I feel very good about how I played, especially that I did not have any bogey today on the final round".

They again missed the green, Kim in a bunker to the right and Jutanugarn over the putting surface in another bunker.

Jutanugarn took the lead after Smith stumbled with consecutive bogeys and then surged with three birdies in a row on the back nine.

But the drama intensified further when Jutanugarn found the front bunker with her approach and caught her splash-out too heavy, and her 12-foot putt for victory slid past the left side of the hole.

Smith began the day alongside Ariya Jutanugarn and Jeongeun6 Lee at the top of the leaderboard. "Not because I want them to play golf, but because I want them to have a good life". Then I actually put a Callaway 3-wood in last week which has been really good. Korean Su-Hyun Oh shot 70 and is also 6 under.

She carried the meltdown through with back-to-back bogeys on 17 and 18.

"I knew from the start it was going to be tight, " said Olesen, who entered the final round tied with Molinari one stroke behind Lee Slattery. "Hopefully, tomorrow I can go out with a little bit more confidence".
