Supreme Court lets states, including OH, legalize sports gambling

It prohibited most states from sponsoring or authorizing betting related to sports. The first bets could be placed within weeks.

If state treasurers are excited about this, so are TV networks who will sell ads to reach would-be gamblers and hope legal betting makes games more vital viewing.

During the most recent legislative session, Kansas lawmakers considered bringing betting to the sunflower state, but nothing could happen until this ruling came down. Modern bettors can wager online via offshore sites and apps, and at least a dozen US states have introduced legislation that will soon revolutionize the practice.

Prior to the ruling, only Nevada, Montana, Delaware, and OR were exempt from sports betting.

Stock prices for casino operators and equipment makers surged after the ruling was announced.

"As each state considers whether to allow sports betting, we will continue to seek the proper protections for our sport, in partnership with other professional sports", Major League Baseball said in a statement.

Scott Cooley, spokesperson for BetDSI, an online sportsbook based in Costa Rica, said he was not anxious about the ruling or any negative impacts increased sports betting may have on sports as a whole.

Looking at a television with the baseball game in progress, Benedict said: "If the Cubs are down 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th and they put up 50 to 1 odds, I'd bet $50".

Now, as major American sports leagues prepare for rapidly approaching betting regulations, the media landscape is shifting too.

Delaware, too, could quickly expand beyond certain bets now offered at its casinos.

In exchange for a share of slot machine revenues from tribal casinos, the state has agreed not to expand off-reservation gambling beyond a state lottery, horse racing, slot machines at racetracks and veterans and fraternal clubs, and bingo and other fundraising activities by nonprofit organizations.

Right now, the only place you can legally bet on sports is Nevada. In order to expedite this process, we have already introduced a bill that would allow this form of gambling at New Jersey's casinos and racetracks.

The nation's top court struck down a 1992 law that widely outlawed gambling on college and professional sports, calling it unconstitutional and likely touching off a rush by gaming businesses and states to cash in on an expected multibillion-dollar industry.

An oddsmaker at one Las Vegas resort sees little chance that betting in other states will siphon business away from Las Vegas.

The legislation would provide for an eight percent gross revenue tax on in-person wagering and a 12.5 percent levy on online sports bets.

Some casinos want to push consideration of sports betting legislation to the fall, he said, giving legislators and advocates more time to research the possible effects of sports gambling and avoid unintended consequences.

Congress enacted the law in 1992.

In a dissenting opinion to Monday's ruling, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg criticized the majority for wielding "an ax to cut down [the law] instead of using a scalpel to trim the statute". Ginsburg wrote for the three that when a portion of a law violates the Constitution, the court "ordinarily engages in a salvage rather than a demolition operation", preserving what it can.

Gov. Greg Abbott and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick would/will shoot down such a proposed measure like they are on a duck hunt.

Congress could try to step in again. Sen.

Monday's decision only allows states to control gambling within their own borders. The state's current governor, Democrat Phil Murphy, said he was "thrilled" to see the high court strike down the "arbitrary ban".

"If you wanted to fix a game in the USA, you had to work with the mob and that wasn't attractive to most athletes", Hill said.

"Gambling no longer feels tawdry and in the shadows", says Chad Millman, head of media at Action.

They called New Jersey's law a threat to the integrity of competition, fearing game-fixing and other types of cheating.
