UC hospital workers demanding fair, equal wages to walkout Monday

The UC insisted that its service workers - including custodians, gardeners, food service workers and facilities maintenance staff - are compensated at or above the market rate, "and in some cases, by as much as 17 percent higher than comparable jobs".

AFSCME Local 3299 also authorized sympathy strikes this week, including its represented patient care workers, UC system nurses represented by the California Nurses Association, and technical workers represented by the University Professional and Technical Employees, according to the union. Strikers at UCD blocked the intersections at Hutchison Drive and La Rue Road then blocked Russell Boulevard and Anderson Road.

Service workers, nurses and technical workers at UC campuses across the state started the planned three-day strike on Monday.

Hilario Aguirre said he has worked at UC Davis for nearly six years. The union representing 9,000 of the lowest paid service workers at UC campuses and hospitals have been working without a contract for more than a year.

"They've been tone deaf to our calls around inequality and stopping the outsourcing", Lybarger said. "We got the power!" as they marched outside the hospital's emergency room. "At the end of the day, we want to make sure that we have stable pensions and secure futures." says De Leon.

Gudz helped lead the group onto the streets to block traffic, and was telling people that "the street doesn't bite" when other participants would tell him to move to the sidewalk.

UC San Francisco spokeswoman Elizabeth Fernandez said Friday that UCSF Medical Center has rescheduled 300 surgeries and appointments for 800 cancer patients.

Thousands of service workers at the University of California went on strike Monday to call for higher wages.

A spokesman for the union told the AP that pay inequality for the workers has been driven by the university "actively seeking to hire contract workers".

"A disruptive demonstration will change neither UC's economic situation nor the university's position on AFSCME's unreasonable demands", Doan said about the strike.

"They'll roll up their sleeves and pitch in", she said, adding that certain wards, such as the bone marrow transplant unit at Jacobs and the region's only burn unit at Hillcrest, are particularly sensitive to no-shows. The university requested 618 employees not be able to participate in the strike, and the board granted the request for 551 workers, citing the challenges the medical center would face amid a strike due to limited labor supplies, according to The San Diego Union-Tribune. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody and transported to UCLA Ronald Reagan Medical Center for evaluation prior to being transported to the UCLA Police Department.
