This Year's Boston Marathon Was Sloooooowww

An American woman and a Japanese man won the elite divisions in the Boston Marathon Monday, the first time runners from each country have taken the top spots in more than 30 years. American Tatyana McFadden, won the women's wheelchair race for the fifth time, wore two jackets, with a layer of plastic between them and hand warmers against her chest.

Despite the pit stop, Linden was still able to finish the 122nd running of the Boston Marathon first in 2 hours 39 minutes 54 seconds.

Pouring rain, thick sheets of fog and bitterly cold winds slowed Biwott's 2018 time by almost 6 1/2 minutes, but he finished behind only Japan's Yuki Kawauchi and Geoffrey Kirui of Kenya.

The determined 2018 Boston Marathon runner crossed the finish line early Tuesday morning, 13 hours after she started running it in Hopkinton, Mass., according to Boston 25.

And she despite one of the worst weather days in marathon history, Mary ran the first 15.5 miles in the heavy wind and torrential rain. Kawauchi was loving the cold, though.

"The conditions were made for me", said Linden, a native Californian who lives in MI. Flanagan finished seventh, Huddle hobbled to 14th and Hasay scratched from the race the day before due to a stress reaction in her heel. Linden spent the last few weeks of her training block in northern MI, where cold and rainy temperatures were the norm, but vastly different from the bulk of her work at altitude and warmth in Arizona.

Linden's time Monday was the slowest of any female victor since 1978 and ten minutes slower than her personal-best - 2:22:38 - from the 2011 Boston Marathon.

"When I took the lead", the Japanese runner said.

Or, more simply, she had to take a bathroom break. When she crossed the finish line several miles later, there were no other runners in sight.

Linden wasn't always looking for a second wind; she wanted to maximize performance while she was exhausted.

"I think I'm going to wake up and this will be a dream", Sellers said. Originally from Utah, she graduated from Ogden High School.

Finally last September, after what amounted to a five-month break, Linden slowly started training again, taking a day off whenever she felt like it.

"This race is so important to me, it's so important to this city".

"She gets it more than some", Hanson said. That time placed her 4613th overall and 575th amongst females.

"And it turned out I was in third, and I thought, 'Well, I probably shouldn't drop out", said Linden, who also earned $150,000. "These are the conditions I train in".

"It's hard to get down when you look on both sides of the street for the vast majority of the race and there's people yelling the entire time", Sellers grinned.
