British FM Boris Johnson: Syrian war will go on despite western strikes

The Trump administration is set to roll out new economic sanctions against Russian Federation for aiding Syrian leader Bashar Assad, said the United States Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley on Sunday.

Gen. Joseph F. Dunford Jr., chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said Friday night that the USA military, in conjunction with British and French forces, had targeted three sites - a scientific research center near Damascus, a chemical weapons storage facility near Homs and a storage facility and command post also near Homs.

But White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders eventually had to own up to a slightly misleading caption on her Saturday tweet: "Last night the President put our adversaries on notice: when he draws a red line he enforces it". White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said the United States mission "has not changed" and Trump wanted troops home "as quickly as possible". "In addition, we expect our regional allies and partners to take greater responsibility both militarily and financially for securing the region". But their unified stance appeared to be shaken Sunday when Washington knocked back French President Emmanuel Macron's claim that Paris had convinced Trump to stay engaged in Syria "for the long-term".

While President Donald Trump praised his military for a successful operation tweeting "Mission Accomplished", the Pentagon was quick to retort, that "this operation does not represent a change in U.S. policy", and that it was not an attempt to dethrone Assad or be involved in the Syrian civil war.

'Mission Accomplished!' But What Is the Mission in Syria?

Mr Ryabkov said: "As far as I understand what is hampering a speedy resolution of this problem is the consequences of the illegal, unlawful military action that Great Britain and other countries conducted on Saturday".

Haley insisted in multiple interviews on Sunday that the US's actions against the Syrian regime and its supporters, which include Russian Federation, have been aggressive.

The White House says the leaders agreed the airstrikes in Syria "were successful and necessary to deter" the future use of chemical weapons.

"Russian sanctions will be coming down", Haley said during a CBS interview on Sunday. Militarily, she said it "means one task now in front of you".

"Trudeau is not acting because the Canadian public doesn't know what is happening in Syria", she said.

But that would imply that the Trump administration has a strategy Syria, or sees a role there for the United States beyond the defeat of the self-proclaimed Islamic State, which it does not.

The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, described the use of chemical weapons as "abhorrent", but stressed that member states must act in accordance with "international law in general".

The team arrived in Syria earlier this week, but its deployment on the ground in the Damascus suburb was slowed down by "security concerns". "Chemical weapons have been prohibited for decades and we must enforce this prohibition".

The Pentagon said it gave no explicit warning.

When asked if there was a more effective way to discourage Assad from using such weapons again, Schake replied, "Yes, you could take Bashar al-Assad out of power".
