CDC: 11-State E. Coli Outbreak Likely from Chopped Romaine Lettuce

As of April 10, 2018, the CDC has confirmed a total of 17 infections spanning 7 states, with New Jersey reporting the most infections (6); 6 of the individuals have been hospitalized for their infections.

About 65 percent of those cases affected females and, while no deaths have been reported, one person developed hemolytic uremic syndrome, a type of kidney failure. Instead, they should be thrown away, even if some of it has already been eaten and no signs of illness have materialized.

So far eight people in Idaho have become sick with E. coli infections, according to the Idaho Department of Health and Welfare.

Health officials are investigating an outbreak of E. coli that has hit seven states over the past four weeks.

The CDC is also warning consumers to ask restaurants if there is romaine they are using in salads is from Yuma, Arizona before eating it.

"If you can not confirm the source of the lettuce, do not buy or eat it", the C.D.C. said in a statement. If the retailer can't confirm it is not from Yuma, Arizona, do not eat it. The CDC reports 35 people have become ill between March 22nd to March 31st in 11 states - CT (2), Idaho (8), IL (1), MI (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (7), NY (2), OH (2), Pennsylvania (9), Virginia (1) and Washington (1).

The outbreak started late last month, affecting mostly women in age from 12 to 84 years old.

The warning includes store-bought chopped lettuce, including salad and salad mixes. The syndrome develops about seven days after symptoms first appear, when diarrhea is improving. "Anyone experiencing symptoms of this illness should see a health care provider".
