Baby born four years after parents died in tragic auto crash

On December 9, 2017, four years after his biological parents had died in a vehicle crash, a baby boy was born by surrogacy in Guangzhou.

Couple Shen Jie and Liu Xi were planning to conceive using in vitro fertilization (IVF) but tragically, the Beijing News reports, five days before the frozen embryo was due to be transplanted into Liu, the pair passed away in a auto accident.

But five days before one of the fertilised embryos was due to be transplanted into Liu, the couple died in a auto accident in March 2013 in the Chinese province of Jiangsu. In December 2016, the surrogacy service received the embryos, which it drove to Laos in early 2017.

Hu Xingxian, Tianian's maternal grandmother, said: "We named him Sweetie, because we hoped his arrival would bring sweetness to us after the bitterness".

It was the first case of its kind and there was no regulation in China advising how to handle untransplanted embryos, so the grandparents were embarking on new legal territory. They finally obtained a court order allowing them to obtain four of the embryos, before "smuggling them over the border to Laos and finding a surrogate mother", The Times reports.

The baby boy, nicknamed "Tiantian" ("sweet" in Mandarin), was successfully born in December 2017, over four years since his parents' fatal accident.

The child was kept in the hospital for 15 days, until all four grandparents gave blood and DNA tests, establishing the baby was indeed their grandson and that both parents were Chinese nationals.

After their untimely death, the grandparents-in-waiting fought a protracted legal battle to inherit the fertilised eggs that were frozen in a Nanjing hospital's liquid nitrogen tank.

She gave birth to Tiantian in China while visiting on a tourist visa, ensuring the boy's citizenship. "Other babies have their fathers and mothers, but he doesn't", said his paternal grandfather Shen Xinan. "We'll tell him in the future".
