Houthi rebels launch drone strike on Saudi-owned oil facility

On Monday, Yemeni forces fired a domestically-manufactured ballistic missile at Nahouqa military base in Saudi Arabia's southern Najran region.

Though, the Saudi-run Al Arabiya television channel reported that Saudi air defence forces had intercepted and destroyed several ballistic missiles over the capital Riyadh, and southern provinces of Jizan and Najran.

The Houthis say their missile attacks on the kingdom are in retaliation for air raids on Yemen by the Western-backed coalition.

"The missile force carried out a large-scale ballistic missile attack on various parts of Saudi Arabia", Al-Masirah said.

The missile is thought to have been fired by Houthi rebels in Yemen, who a Saudi-led coalition has been bombing since March 2015, when it intervened in support of ousted President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi in an effort to prevent Houthis from maintaining the capital of Sanaa.

Al-Masirah said the Houthis had also launched an attack with the same model of drone on the airport of Abha in neighboring Asir province, Reuters reported.

The Houthis and their allies have used the drones to disable Patriot missile defense systems deployed by Saudi-led forces in Yemen, said vehicle.

There was no immediate Saudi comment on the report. The Houthis said they were targeting an Aramco facility in Jizan, but the company said its facilities there were operating "normally and safely".

More than 10,000 Yemenis have died in the conflict and millions in the impoverished country have been pushed to the brink of starvation.

Yemen lies along one of the main global oil chokepoints in the Red Sea.

Saudi Arabia and its allies launched the war in March 2015 in support of Yemen's former Riyadh-friendly government and against the Houthi Ansarullah movement, which is now running state affairs.
