The US Treasury announced earlier in the day that it has imposed new sanctions on 38 Russian individuals and entities, including seven business leaders and 17 senior officials, for their alleged "malign activity" around the world.

The ministry said no pressure could make Russia change course and that the sanctions would only unite Russian society. These attacks have included chemical weapons attacks, which claimed the lives of hundreds of Syrian citizens.

Russia's President Vladimir Putin, left, and Russian metals magnate Oleg Deripaska walk to attend the APEC Business Advisory Council dialogue in Danang, Vietnam, Nov. 10, 2017. Moscow has been blamed for the "NotPetya" cyber attacks, which targeted Ukraine, but spread to Australia, Europe, and the US.

As a result of the punishment, all assets of the designated persons and entities that are subject to United States jurisdiction are frozen, and USA persons are generally prohibited from dealing with them.

But yesterday's announcement also came as Washington and its allies face a new diplomatic crisis with the Kremlin over the attempted poisoning of a former Russian double agent on British soil. Moscow denies involvement in the attack, but Skripal and his daughter were poisoned with the nerve agent, novichok, only known to be manufactured in Russian Federation. It also denounced the USA move as "yet another misguided step that [leads] to the destruction of free enterprise, competition and integration in the world economy." . But Leonid Slutsky, who chairs the foreign relations committee in Russia's lower house of parliament, said there was "no sensible reasons or grounds" for the USA actions. After Rusal, a Russian aluminum producer, was sanctioned, shares in the company went down 2.2%. Sanctions were also slapped on a state-owned Russian weapons trading company and its subsidiary, a bank.

The Russian government engages in a range of malign activity around the globe, including continuing to occupy Crimea and instigate violence in eastern Ukraine, supplying the Assad regime with material and weaponry as they bomb their own civilians, attempting to subvert Western democracies, and malicious cyber activities. "The Russian government operates for the disproportionate benefit of oligarchs and government elites", Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said.

Trump has been criticized by many for not taking a stronger stance on Russian Federation election interference and destabilizing actions. Since the election, critics have been vocal in their condemnation of the Kremlin's alleged intervention into the election, as well as the the oligarchs and billionaire elites who surround Putin.

Of these, 17 are Russian government officials and seven are "oligarchs" who own or control 12 firms.

The sanctions freeze the USA assets of "oligarchs" such as aluminum tycoon Oleg Deripaska, a close associate of President Vladimir Putin, and lawmaker Suleiman Kerimov, whose family controls Russia's largest gold producer, Polyus. In January, lists of Russian officials and oligarchs were published by the State Department and Treasury.

- Kirill Shamalov, who is reportedly Mr Putin's son-in-law, married to his daughter Katerina Tikhonova, although neither Mr Putin nor the Kremlin have acknowledged that she is his daughter.

Russia's state arms exporter, was also added to the sanctions list. The Treasury said Deripaska was accused of illegal wiretaps, extortion, racketeering, money laundering and even death threats against business rivals. Other companies that were put on the list include an agriculture company, Agroholding Kuban; one of the largest diversified industrial groups in Russia, the Basic Element; also listed are a auto, train and plane producer, Russian Cars (Russkie Mashiny).
