Donald Trump may travel to Jerusalem for embassy opening

Trump argued that his decision to recognize Jerusalem resolved a tough issue dividing Israel and the Palestinians.

He said that despite their anger, "the Palestinians, I think, are wanting to come back to the table".

A ribbon-cutting for an interim facility is being planned to coincide with the 70th anniversary of Israel's independence. Hours before his meeting with Trump, it was confirmed that an ex-aide of the Israeli prime minister agreed to become a state witness in a corruption probe that has imperiled his premiership.

"That was a decision I had to make", Trump said in the Oval Office on Monday.

The wives discussed Melania Trump's efforts against the cyberbullying of children and Sara Netanyahu's efforts on behalf of children with cancer, Holocaust survivors, lone soldiers and bereaved families.

The two will hold talks and sit down to a working lunch before Netanyahu speaks later in the week at the annual conference of the powerful pro-Israel lobby, AIPAC.

The decision caused uproar in the Arab world and led Palestinian leaders to reject a U.S. role in mediating a resolution to the decades old Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Palestinians and other critics insist it will be dead on arrival.

For all the warmth and bonhomie, misgivings are percolating under the surface over Iran, where Israel sees Trump's efforts to crack down on the Jewish state's archenemy as lacking.

Before taking off to his meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump, Netanyahu was asked if Israel is heading for early elections due to political infighting over the conscription of Jewish ultra-Orthodox into the army. Others talked about it.

Trump also told reporters that he may visit Jerusalem al-Quds as work begins on the new embassy in that city expected to open in May. They will not accept any Israeli security presence in a Palestinian state. "We're looking at coming". Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said Sunday on ABC's "This Week".

But he added that because of Iran, it is also important to "exploit the opportunities for peace" with the Palestinians. An already volatile situation now looks even more combustible than normal.

"Sometimes there's disagreement" with the United States "and sometimes we even acted in the greater interest" of Israel".

American Jews, who consistently vote Democratic, disapprove of Trump in greater numbers than Americans generally.

Vice President Mike Pence, however, sought to assure Israel that the administration would not back down on Iran.

The day before Israel's first couple left for Washington, police questioned both Netanyahu and his wife, Sara, in connection with a burgeoning corruption case.

The Trump family has legal problems of its own. Trump has worked to alter the Obama-era nuclear agreement, which both he and Netanyahu have derided. Kushner has lost his top-level security clearance.

Trump's plan to move the USA embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem this year has brought the two leaders closer together, but it has also infuriated Palestinians and was condemned by 128 states in a United Nations General Assembly vote in December.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, angered by Trump's Jerusalem move, has refused to engage with the United States on Middle East peace, prompting Trump to delay the rollout of peace proposals.Participating in the talks was Trump's senior adviser and son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who has been on the defensive amid investigations into alleged meddling by Russian Federation in the 2016 presidential campaign. Some analysts believe Kushner's ability to run the Middle East initiative has been handicapped by his loss of access to certain valued US intelligence because of a White House clampdown on access to such secrets for those without full security clearance. Hefetz would be the third Netanyahu associate to sign a state witness deal in recent months. And if the US renews sanctions, that would mean that the USA would effectively pull out of the nuclear agreement.

The Europeans have balked at the possibility of medium-range missile restrictions, arguing that existing United Nations resolutions on Iran only focus on longer-range projectiles. He's meeting with President Trump.
