Trump, press trade zingers at Gridiron Dinner

US President Donald Trump appeared at the Gridiron Dinner on Saturday night to engage rivals, both political and journalistic, in some good-natured roasting.

Mr Trump joked about his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, who has reportedly had his security clearance downgraded.

Accused frequently of being thin-skinned, President Trump reassured the audience that "nobody does self-deprecating humor better than I do", the Associated Press reported.

That sounds like Trump going off-script more than anything else.

Of course, Trump wasn't without harsh words for his Democratic opponents, referring to House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi as "crazy" and suggesting he would "would kick [Joe Biden's] ass like no other", referring to the former vice president as "sleepy Joe".

Trump then turned his attention to Vice President Mike Pence.

In a nod to his penchant for over-the-top praise of his accomplishments, Trump said, "My staff was concerned that I couldn't do self-deprecating humor".

Trump declined an invitation to the 133-year-old event last year, opting to stay away from a press corps that he loves to attack.

Trump also took aim at one of his favorite targets: the press, who he described as his "opposition party." The New Orleans official also observed, "No matter how many times we say it, we don't drain the swamps either".

The gala was "was great fun", he tweeted on Sunday.

Waters brought up how everyone talks about Trump--he's a liar, etc. "So let's see what happens", Trump said at the Renaissance Washington Hotel to more than 600 attendees, including journalists.

Trump was accompanied by First Lady Melania, along with his daughter and White House adviser, Ivanka. This, of course, was a parody of the Supremes' "You Can' Hurry Love" that poked fun at Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation.

It was, most reviews indicate, slightly less disastrous than the 2016 Al Smith dinner, during which Trump was booed for his so-called "jokes" about how much Hillary Clinton "hates Catholics".

Trump returned to Washington on Saturday afternoon after a short trip to his estate in Mar-a-Lago, Fla., where he hosted a fundraiser earlier in the day.

"A couple days ago they said we would like to talk, and I said, so would we, but you have to de-nuke, you have to de-nuke".

Every president since has come to at least one Gridiron dinner.

That show poked fun at Trump and many people in his inner circle, including Steve Bannon, the president's chief strategist at the time, by portraying him in a devil's costume.

During his remarks Saturday night, the president largely put aside his criticism of the media.
