Hospital In Kenya Operates On Wrong Person's Head

Colleagues at the Kenyatta National Hospital in Nairobi are upset a neurosurgeon and three medical staff members were suspended.

The two were shown door to pave way for investigations over the surgery done to a wrong patient.

Following a mix-up in tagging, the doctors operated on the patient with the head injury, only to discover hours into the surgery that the patient they were working on had no clot in his brain.

The Kenyatta National Hospital, which admitted the horrific error has suspended the doctor, as well as two nurses and an anaesthetist, according to a statement on Friday.

Hospital chief executive Lily Koros has come forward to say that they "deeply regret" the mix up, according to the BBC.

Dr Thomas Mutei and John Ong'ech will run the hospital as investigations continue into the mishap that led to asurgery on the wrong patient. The management has suspended the admission rights of a neurosurgery registrar and issued him with a show-cause letter for apparently operating on the wrong patient. Both patients are recuperating well, in what has been described as a "miracle of some sort".

Until then, the country awaits to hear what action will be taken against the doctors and the entire management as the hospital tries to redeem its image and reputation.

The clot had been spotted on a CT scan, but after the patients' identification tags got mixed up, the wrong man was wheeled into surgery, the newspaper said.

"Besides, the file details and patient label tallied".

After consulting a senior neurosurgeon, the operating doctor reportedly was instructed to proceed no further, clean up the area and close the head.

The doctor examined a CT scan of the patient and his file before recommending surgery.

The Nation reports that - "in a miracle of some sort" - the two patients are in good condition.

Surgeons only realised their mistake when they tried to search for the clot in the brain of the second man whose head they had opened and couldn't see anything.
