A Lost 'Supercolony' Of Penguins Was Discovered In The Antarctic

The team conducted the first ever comprehensive census of the flightless birds using aerial drones, satellite photos, ship-borne photo surveillance and on-the-ground nest counting during a survey trip aboard the M/V Hans Hansson from December 9-18, 2015. There, they found hundreds of thousands of penguins crammed in the rocky soil.

The incredible discovery was captured using a video drone, which snapped the countless birds on their remote and risky island home from the air. When he arrived, he spotted penguin nests, and since then he has known that he discovered something big on the islands.

The authors highlighted that the area inhabited by this large group of penguins seems not to be affected by climate change and the human presence has been non-existent until now. "How did we miss this really obvious thing?"

Dr Hart told the BBC: 'On the West Antarctic Peninsula, Adelie and chinstrap penguins are declining pretty fast, while Gentoo penguins are increasing.

The Danger Islands, said the team, has felt the ravages of climate change less than the western peninsula, and knew very little human activity.

Poilito believes the year-round icy conditions is a key reason that the penguins were overlooked.

Amazing drone pics reveal MILLIONS of penguins in Antarctic 'mega-colonies'

Even the most visited of the isles, Heroina Island at the chain's northeastern tip, receives only about one ship landing per year. The small, Antarctic native had thought to be in decline for the past 40 years due to climate change.

Using a Quadcopter drone, the researchers flew a grid pattern across the islands, taking multiple photos of the birds and their nests. Scientifically, while this is a huge number of "new" penguins, they are only new to science. Counting them by hand and using drone surveys they found there were 751,527 pairs of penguins on the islands - more than the rest of the Antarctic Peninsula combined.

They are carnivores, and krill - shrimp-like creatures that are commercially fished in the area - is an Adelie staple.

But it's still unclear exactly why the island colonies are so stable.

"We want to understand why". It's locked up in sea ice most of the year, and even in summer it's hard to reach.

The number of penguins in the Danger Islands could provide insight into the effects of changing temperature and sea ice on the region's ecology. Polito said the publication of their study comes at just the right time to assist in that effort, as an worldwide body that oversees Antarctica's wildlife resources is expected to review new refuge proposals in October. "It's probably the last major population of penguins that we didn't know were there in the first place".
