Russian Federation blocks United Nations resolution citing Iran for arming Yemen rebels

Russian Federation vetoed Monday (Tuesday in Manila) a UN draft resolution presented by Britain and strongly backed by the United States that would have pressured Iran over its failure to block supplies of missiles to Yemen's Huthi rebels.

A council resolution needs nine votes in favor and no vetoes by Russia, China, the United States, France or Britain to pass. It received 11 votes in favor, two against - Russian Federation and Bolivia - while China and Kazakhstan abstained.

Russian Federation has proposed a rival resolution that would simply extend the mandate of the regime for one year and not mention Iran.

The Iranian mission accused Britain and the United States, both allies and arms suppliers of Saudi Arabia, of being "major military supporters of the war of aggression against Yemen".

A UK-drafted resolution aimed at pressuring Iran over alleged weapons supplies to Yemeni fighters has failed at the UN Security Council.

It came in response to a report prepared by a United Nations panel of experts, which found that missiles fired by Yemen's Houthi rebels at Saudi Arabia a year ago were made in Iran.

The UN Security Council's condemnation of Iran for its destabilizing actions in Yemen was blocked by Russian Federation, its ally.

The UK draft would have caused "fracturing of security council and sow discord at a time when the Security Council is in dire need of closing its ranks", he argued, adding that Russia's concerns about the divisive nature of the UK draft were "shared by many delegates".

Haley has taken a hawkish stance on Iran, accusing Tehran of sowing instability in the Middle East and failing to live up to its commitments under the landmark 2015 nuclear deal.

The British-drafted resolution against Iran at the UN Security Council over the Yemen conflict would be helping the "aggressors", Foreign Ministry spokesman Bahram Qassemi said on Monday, slamming the British government for its "dishonest" behavior.

Iran UN envoy also stated that the war in Yemen is going on with American and British weapons, which have plunged the country into a crisis.

"If Russia is going to continue to cover for Iran then the USA and our partners need to take action on our own".

The US immediately lashed out at Moscow for its veto, blaming Russian Federation for shielding a "terrorist-sponsoring" Iran.

Russia, which has traditionally friendly relations with Iran, is providing military support along with Tehran to Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's forces.

An alarming 17 million people in Yemen - 60 percent of the total population - are in need of food aid, of whom seven million are on the brink of starvation because of the conflict, according to the United Nations.

The UNSC resolution aims to prolong the experts' mandate in Yemen, not to form an anti-Iran coalition in the region, Nebenzia pointed out.

"Such blame games are being played by those who are fanning the flames of war and bloodshed in Yemen".
