Syria wants UN to condemn US 'massacre'

Syrian state television confirmed the reports Thursday and said the USA -led attack took place east of the Euphrates river in Deir al-Zor province in eastern Syria, causing casualties.

The US-led coalition said on Thursday it conducted a defensive strike against an unprovoked attack near the Euphrates River by hundreds of troops aligned with the Syrian regime, backed by artillery, tanks, multiple-launch rocket systems and mortars, a step revealing Washington's plan to draw a red line for Damascus and Russian Federation.

The US-led coalition's attack on pro-government forces in Syria has again proven that Washington's true goal is to capture "economic assets" instead of fighting terrorism, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

The military spokesperson said the coalition believes that pro-regime forces were attempting to seize territory, including lucrative oil fields east of the Euphrates River, that the SDF had liberated from ISIS in September.

This clash, which took place in Khusham near the Euphrates River, is the largest reported to date between US -backed forces and pro-regime forces in Syria.

The US-led coalition in Syria committed a "war crime" by bombing pro-Assad forces and should be dismantled, Syria told the United Nations in a letter on Thursday.

This is a line that the coalition and the Syrian regime has agreed to and which their forces are not supposed to cross so as to prevent any conflicts.

The U.S. maintains about 2,000 troops in the country. Russian Federation said it did not have personnel in the area, and its defense ministry said it only confirmed 25 Syrian militia were wounded, and no deaths.

White added that all pro-government vehicles and personnel who turned around and headed west were not targeted during the coalition strikes.

The Euphrates valley is one of open fronts still in fight against Islamic State (ISIS).

CNN reported Thursday afternoon that USA forces are now looking into whether Russian contractors were involved in the initial attack against US -allied forces, which did not lead to any US casualties.

Defence Secretary James Mattis said Thursday that the United States (US) is not "getting engaged in the Syrian civil war, China's Xinhua News Agency reported".

There are roughly 2,000 USA troops operating in Syria, mostly with SDF forces fighting ISIS.

This is not the first time the U.S. military has clashed with pro-regime forces in Syria. Assad regime forces are active on the other side of the river around the city of Deir el-Zour.

Syria's regime and pro-Assad Russia were furious with the strikes.
