U.S. announces takedown of $530 million cyberfraud network

Thirteen out of 36 individuals indicted for their alleged involvement in a transnational cybercrime group know as Infraud have been arrested, the US Department of Justice announced on Wednesday.

The group, it is claimed, is responsible for somewhere between $530m and $2.2bn in losses, related to the compromise of 4.3 million credit cards, debit cards and bank accounts in all fifty U.S. states and beyond America's borders. "But unlike the organized crime of years past, numerous organization's almost 11,000 members have never met in person and do not know the true identities of their co-conspirators".

According to the indictment, a 34-year-old Ukrainian named Svyatoslav Bondarkeno started the site in 2010, with the goal of making it the premier destination for stolen credit card information.

"As alleged in the indictment, Infraud operated like a business to facilitate cyberfraud on a global scale".

"We discuss at length the structure of the organisation and the hierarchical organisation that it had in terms of administrators and vendors and other members like Okeakpu who were moderators of certain forums that were featured on the website".

Pakistan, Afghanistan agree to continue talks on joint action plan
The first meeting of the Pakistan-Afghanistan Joint Working Groups will be held in Kabul on Saturday, an official said. He said Foreign Secretary has explained that instead of blame game both sides should engage in concrete cooperation.

"Today's indictment and arrests mark one of the largest cyberfraud enterprise prosecutions ever undertaken by the Department of Justice", Acting Assistant Attorney General John P. Cronan said in a statement. Infraud also provided escrow services that facilitated illegal currency transactions between members.

Super moderators on the site "oversaw and administered specific subject matter areas within their expertise", according to United States authorities.

Infraud members used an online discussion forum to "discuss, meet, and conduct criminal activities", and to advertise them, the indictment said.

The takedown of Infraud - dubbed Operation Shadow Web - was an worldwide effort and the Australian Federal Police was among the law enforcement agencies thanked by the Department of Justice for their role. According to the indictment, Infraud directed buyers to its members' automated vending sites, using them as "online conduits" to deal in in stolen IDs, banking information, malicious software, and illicit goods.
