Palestinian shot dead after stabbing Israeli

Israeli reports said the army bragged about being able to kill Jarrar after running weeks of wide-scale manhunt for him in the north of the West Bank.

One Palestinian was killed and 47 others were injured in ensuing clashes with IDF soldiers as they left the area, according to the Palestinian health ministry.

Medical sources said the child, identified as Nizar Ra'ed al-Lowzi, 16, was shot with three live rounds in his face, chest and thigh, before he was rushed to Palestine Medical Complex in Ramallah, where he received the urgently needed treatment.

The Israeli army, for its part, said the Palestinian was killed after he stabbed and lightly wounded a security guard in the community of Karmei Tzur in Hebron.

Tensions have risen since US President Donald Trump's controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel's capital on December 6 that sparked a string of stabbing incidents across the region, as well as an uptick in rocket attacks from the Gaza Strip.

There was no indication of a direct link between the two attacks, with violence common in the West Bank between Palestinians and Israeli settlers or security forces.

Another occupation soldier shot and killed the attacker, the military said in a statement.

Jarrar, who Hamas described as a commander, was the leader of the terrorist cell responsible for the killing of a rabbi, Raziel Shevach, last month.

Israeli settlements are seen as illegal under global law and a major obstacle to peace as they are built on land the Palestinians see as part of their future state.

Israel faced sharp criticism from the administration of former U.S. president Barack Obama over settlement construction, but that has not been the case under his successor Donald Trump.

Ahmed Jarrar, 23, was killed by Israeli forces near Jenin.
