Indians to eliminate controversial Chief Wahoo logo for 2019

At the start of the 2017 season, MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred publicly commented on the team logo for the first time, stating his desire for the team to move away from the insignia.

The Atlanta Braves have also been under fire for their team name and famous pre-game tomahawk chant.

"Major League Baseball is committed to building a culture of diversity and inclusion throughout the game", said Manfred in a statement.

The Indians will wear the Wahoo logo this season and continue to sell merchandise featuring it.

While some fans will be upset about the removal of the logo, team owner Paul Dolan has agreed to removing the logo from use, and there's nothing more that can be done about it.

Ray Halbritter, a member of Oneida Nation and the leader of the "Change the Mascot" protest campaign, celebrated the change.

The Native American mascot logo will be removed from all jerseys and caps, the Associated Press reports. Still, even one major sports team dropping a racist mascot, however gradually, is cause for Native activists to celebrate.

"It's a small step in the right direction, but it is just that - a small step", Cleveland activist Sundance told NPR.

Chief Wahoo products will not be available on the MLB's official website. "The environment down at the stadium is not going to change for the better".

Sundance was involved in a lawsuit back in 1972, attempting to force the team to drop the logo. You may not be offended by Chief Wahoo, but many are - including the Native Americans who demonstrate outside Progressive Field every opening day - and that's plenty reason enough.

Reaction to the announcement was swift on social media as fans took sides on a touchy topic that has become part of the Cleveland sports landscape for generations. Well, the offseason is nearly officially over, and while Wahoo will indeed stick around for 2018, it will not be part of the Tribe's uniforms - caps and jerseys - going forward beginning in 2019, the team announced. He later admitted that he was "bothered" by the Chief Wahoo logo.

Debuting in 1948, the logo has remained in circulation even as the team has made it less prominent in favor of the new block "C" logo that now adorns their main caps.

The NFL's Washington Redskins have come under similar pressure to change their Indian-head logo and their name but so far have resisted. The case was initially dismissed by a judge, but the Ontario Human Rights Tribunal ruled in June that an Ontario court could hear the case.
