Schumer: Shutdown talks with Trump are like 'negotiating with Jello'

House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) criticized Democrats on the floor, blaming them for the government shutdown.

Lawmakers are at odds over a range of defense spending and immigration issues, including a legislative fix for almost 800,000 undocumented young people brought to the U.S.as children. President Donald Trump ended the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or DACA, late past year, but he gave Congress until March 5 to pass legislation extending it. DACA protects some 700,000 immigrants from deportation.

Democrats say Trump and his Republicans keep moving the goal posts, with the president on Friday rejecting a budget and immigration deal that even included funding for his cherished wall along the U.S. border with Mexico, one of the chief planks of his presidential campaign.

The Senate's top Democrat, Chuck Schumer, blasted his rivals for failing to lead despite controlling both the White House and both chambers of Congress.

"This is another example of President Trump throwing a tweet in the middle of bi-partisan negotiations that are making progress", Coons said.

"I hope we can find a way to open the government back up and go about our business, and let the Senate legislate as it should".

"The President's behavior is inimical to compromise, which is required to get things done in government".

FBI Agents 'PRESSURED' to END Hillary Probe After Trump Nomination — BIAS ALERT
She said that Trump running against Hillary Clinton for the presidency was "unbelievable" after Ted Cruz dropped out of the race. He also asks for the "scope and scale" of any other records from the Clinton investigation that have been lost.

Even though the Democrats in 2013 changed the rule that allowed filibusters for lower-court and appeals-court judge nominees and even though McConnell expanded that rule in 2017 to cover Supreme Court justice nominees, he doesn't want to get end the longtime Senate quirk altogether. The government is now most likely to reopen latest by tomorrow.

The final vote tally in the Senate early Saturday morning was 50-49, with the the majority of Democrats and a handful of Republicans voting against advancing the short-term spending bill.

The government shutdown will remain in effect going into Monday after senators failed to come to an agreement to end it. Majority Leader Sen. Lindsey Graham of SC suggested one possibility: a bill that would fund the government in exchange for a commitment to move onto immigration after February 8.

Mulvaney compared Senate Democrats to toddlers having a temper tantrum.

Republicans counter that Democrats rejected a bill that has nothing objectionable in it, but does not include the opposition party's priorities on the unrelated issue of immigration.

Government operations began ramping down on the one-year anniversary of Trump's presidency.
