Yemen struggle: Saudi-led coalition pledges $1.5bn in new assist

Yemen is the world's worst humanitarian crisis, where 8.3 million people are entirely dependent on external food aid and 400,000 children suffer from severe acute malnutrition, a potentially lethal condition, according to the United Nations.

A Saudi-led coalition fighting for legitimacy in Yemen on Monday announced $1.5 billion in new humanitarian aid for Yemen.

"There is a misconception that the Saudi-led coalition has lifted its blockade on Hudaydah port - but fuel is still being blocked, leading to crippling shortages across the country and unsustainable rises in the price of basic goods", it added.

Saudi Arabia and its allies are facing mounting criticism - including from the U.S. - over the civilian toll in Yemen's conflict.

"The coalition will coordinate". The Saudi ambassador also said that an airdrome will be prepared in Marib to secure the arrival of aid provided by all worldwide organisations.

The Council of Ministers on Tuesday expressed its appreciation for the directive of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman that $2 billion be deposited in the account of Yemen's central bank raising the total deposit in the bank to $3 billion.

The new aid programme seeks to boost monthly imports to 1.4 million metric tons from 1.1 million past year, the statement said.

"The coalition is placing its military resources at the disposal of these broad-ranging humanitarian operations", said coalition Al-Maliki.

Another almost 2,200 Yemenis have died of cholera amid deteriorating hygiene and sanitation conditions, according to the World Health Organisation.
