Researchers Develop Single Blood Test that Screens for Eight Cancer Types

"The results are good enough to warrant the next step, which is to test this in a screening setting, meaning in thousands of individuals that actually do not have cancer and see really how well our test works".

The test was undertaken in 1,005 patients with diagnosed non-metastatic (ovarian, gastric, pancreatic, esophageal, colorectal, lung and breast) non-metastatic (stage one to three) cancers who had not spread to other organs. The sensitivity was 69% or higher for ovarian, liver, stomach, pancreatic, and oesophagal cancers - all types that are hard to detect early.

Cancer survival rates are directly linked to how advanced the disease is in a patient during diagnosis, which means that blood tests that can accurately detect the illness well before the symptoms are present is urgently needed, according to the institute.

Professor Richard Marais, a researcher at the Cancer Research UK, also relayed his opinion on CancerSEEK, "Detecting cancer early, before the disease has spread, is one of the most powerful ways to improve cancer survival and this interesting research is a step towards being able to do this earlier than is now possible".

A new breakthrough has been recorded by some group of scientists who disclosed that the disease can now be detected earlier through a new and revolutionary blood test that can determine eight different types of the disease.

At this point, there are cases in which CancerSEEK can detect a form of cancer, without pinpointing exactly where it is located, but the number of situations when the test localized the disease reached 60 percent, while in 20 percent of the cases the location of the cancer was limited to two potential areas.

From flowing DNA in the blood, the test analyses levels of eight cancer proteins altogether and assess the cancer gene mutation's presence. In the end, the test detected the patients with 70 percent accuracy rate.

There are still no effective screening tests for many major tumor types and available tests can each only screen for one cancer at a time, the report said.

With the continuous efforts towards the severe health issue- Cancer, a team of researchers managed to find out a way to detect this disease, way before the beginning of symptoms.

Tomasetti, relayed to the British Broadcasting Corporation, that "This field of early detection is critical".

As far as the costs of the screening are concerned, the CancerSEEK test was estimated at approximately $500 per person, making it accessible to a wider range of people.

The investigators feel that a test that will be used routinely for cancer screening must have a cost in line with or less than other now available screening tests for single cancers, such as colonoscopy.
