Bus fire in Kazakhstan: Short circuit a preliminary cause of fire

At least 52 people have died in a bus fire in Kazakhstan when flames engulfed the vehicle as it travelled along a major highway.

Five people managed to escape and were treated by rescue workers after the incident in Kazakhstan. "The rest died on the spot", the ministry said.

The country's Emergencies Ministry said the fire occured in the northern Aktobe region, leaving 52 dead.

Five people survived the blaze, the ministry said, which was near the village of Kalybai.

Separately, Uzbekistan's emergencies ministry said it was sending a plane with its own team of doctors and rescuers to the site.

A picture provided by the Kazakh emergency situations ministry shows the burning bus on a road in the Aktobe region. There were 55 passengers and 2 drivers in the Ikarus passenger bus.

A photograph taken later showed the blackened vehicle. The bus did not have a license to transport passengers, the ministry said.

Both Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have set up government commissions to establish the cause of the accident and identify victims.
