Facebook is working on a new section for local news

The move comes as part of Facebook's Journalism Project Initiative, a program the company announced in January 2017 that seeks to build out local news partnerships, among other goals.

Social media giant Facebook has launched a new product called "Today in" that aims to push local news and information to those with a profile on the platform. Billings, Mont.; Peoria, Ill.; Olympia, Wash.; and Binghamton, N.Y. will now have access to a new section, called "Today In [city name]".

The section will be powered by a mix of machine learning software and human workers used to surface the local content. Facebook news partnership team will approve local news publishers after testing their authenticity.

The users will then also be able to follow the cities that they do not now live in, like childhood hometown.

The move comes as part of Facebook's Journalism Project announced in January past year to curb the spread of fake news on its platform and build out local news partnerships. This should help assuage some of the "fake news" concerns that have plagued Facebook over the past year or more.

The social network said Thursday that it's overhauling the news feed prioritize posts from family and friends, as opposed to ones from brands and publishers.

The social networking firm wants to expand this app to more cities and then other countries gradually.
