Padmavati Controversy: Name Change can Get it Released?

Title to be changed from "Padmavati" to "Padmavat" as the filmmakers have attributed their material/creative source as the fictional poem "Padmavat" and not history.

In what should come as a massive relief to filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, "Padmavati" the yet to be released film that has sharply divided both the film and the political fraternities is expected to hit the screens soon, having recieved necessary clearances from the Central Board of Film Certification that has provided it with a U/A certificate. On the other hand, Sri Rajput Karni Sena started protesting against the film ever since it was made on the grounds that it distorts Rajput history. While many government officials are spewing venom against the filmmakers, some union ministers have suggested Bhansali hold a special screening for the opponents of film and historians.

The board also suggested modifications in disclaimers, pertinently adding one regarding not glorifying the practice of "Sati" and also relevant changes in the song "Ghoomar" to befit the character portrayed, the release further stated. The film was originally scheduled to release on December 1.

Bhansali Productions, in a written communication to the CBFC, had earlier requested that a panel of historians/academicians and members of the Rajput community should watch the film.

Haryana's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Chief Media Coordinator Suraj Pal Amu had grabbed the headlines nationwide after he announced a bounty of Rs 10 crore for beheading film Padmavati's actress Deepika Padukone and director Sanjay Leela Bhansali. "Panel member had insights and also some reservations regarding claimed historical events and socio-cultural aspects which were duly discussed at length", the board official added. The story revolves around the queen Padmini of Chittore, her husband Rawal Ratan Singh and the adversities they face while fighting the tyrant ruler Alauddin Khilji. "They are in agreement with the modifications", the Board said. The movie, which also stars Shahid Kapoor and Ranveer Singh, is set in the 14th century and tells the story of Rajput queen Padmavati of the kingdom of Chittor, Rajasthan.

The reports said the Examining Committee of CBFC viewed the film on Dec 28 and altered its title from Padmavati to Padmavat.
