Manchester City set to sign Liverpool target Virgil van Dijk

Having been so closely linked with Liverpool over the summer, his name has also been placed alongside Chelsea and even Barcelona, however the unbeatable City could be about to get their man.

The pair seemingly had put their quarrel to bed with van Dijk featuring regularly in Southampton's defence after making his return to the side in the 1-0 away win at Crystal Palace back in September.

City are in advanced talks with the Saints over a transfer, with the South Coast club now prepared to cash in on the 26-year-old, who is contracted at St Mary's until June 2022. Speaking on Van Dijk, Pellegrino told the media, "I decided that was best for this moment".

"The fans have the same feeling we have", said Pellegrino, whose Southampton team have now won one of their last 11 games. Liverpool and Chelsea have also shown interest in signing Van Dijk but the Reds withdrew their pursuit of the player after being reported to the FA for tapping up.

De Vrij has played 33 times for the Dutch national team and was part of the squad that finished 3rd in the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

According to The Telegraph, Southampton are resigned to losing Virgil van Dijk in January with Manchester City the favourites to sign the centre-back. With Javier Mascherano looking to leave the club after almost seven years with Barcelona, the Catalan giants will lose a key defender.

Liverpool desperately need to sign a new central defender in the winter transfer window if they are to challenge the best of teams in the UEFA Champions League KO stages and to finish in the top four in the PL again.

A dominant leader at the back could have steadied the ship when Arsenal snatched a goal, but they folded like a deck of cards once more and it should have been the final trigger to sanction what would be a world record deal for a defender to get Van Dijk.
