Emergency call from inside derailed Amtrak train

But what was supposed to be a joyous morning turned into tragedy as the first Amtrak Cascades train to traverse the route derailed, killing several people.

Several hours after the 7:34am (1534 GMT) crash, train cars remained dangling from the overpass, with others strewn across Interstate 5, a major West Coast route stretching from the Canadian to Mexican borders.

- March 14, 2016: An Amtrak train travelling from Los Angeles to Chicago derailed in southwest Kansas, sending five cars off the tracks and injuring at least 32 people.

A local reporter for local NBC affiliate KING 5 News captured video footage aboard the Amtrak train that derailed in DuPont, Washington, on Monday.

At least three people on board were killed, local authorities said, contradicting a USA official briefed on the investigation who said that at least six were dead.

The bypass is a $181 million project created to make train travel through the region safer, quicker, and more reliable.

Local authorities reported multiple casualties.

KOMO quoted the mayor saying, "Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens".

Amtrak president and co-chief executive Richard Anderson said he was "deeply saddened" by the crash.

The multi-year, state-led project cost $181 million, a released from Amtrak stated. "Emergency services are on the scene and Amtrak management is responding", it said in an earlier tweet.

All southbound lanes of Interstate 5 were closed south of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, and motorists were being warned to avoid the area. "They are our top priority, and I know first responders are doing everything to ensure everyone has the care they need". "We will do everything in our power to support our passengers and crew and their families".
