Police shoot knifeman at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport

A man threatening travelers with a knife was shot today at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport.

One Twitter user said: "Just been evacuated from Schiphol Airport due to suspected shooting".

The airport's crowded entrance plaza, where trains arrive underground to arrivals and departures halls, was briefly evacuated, Tom Goemans, a spokesman for Schiphol, said.

The Dutchman wielding a knife was shot by military police following the incident which saw him making threats at the airport but there were no reports of other injuries after the happenstance.

The situation is now safe, the Marechaussee police service said, and the suspect had been detained and removed from the scene. "He was injured and has been taken into custody".

However, the flight scheduled for 6:30 a.m. was delayed repeatedly because of weather and kept passengers inside the cabin. Police officers were waiting for her as left the plane and walked to the end of the Jetway, the Post reports .

People at the airport were terrified when they realized what was going on, an Amsterdam resident called Tobias told the Telegraaf.

"Man shot by the military police at Schiphol Airport after he threatened [people] with a knife". No details of his condition were released and a motive is unclear. "At the moment air traffic is not affected".

Dramatic video shows four armed officers with guns rushing towards a Starbucks in the airport terminal before shots are heard.

The incident is not being treated as an extremist attack, spokesman Stan Verberkt said.

Although Tobias was not there at the shooting, he saw the suspect being taken away after.
