Consuming Tea Reduces the Risk of Glaucoma

"Glaucoma becomes more common with age, and is a significant cause of blindness in the UK".

Researchers who wrote in the British Journal of Opthalmology in the U.S. reported how they examined information from a 2005-2006 nationwide health and nutrition survey, observing the results of eye examinations from 1,678 participants aged 40 and above.

Decaffeinated tea and iced tea may have lower levels of polyphenols than hot brewed tea, which is why they may not have been associated with lower glaucoma risk.

Although prior research indicated that caffeine has the ability to alter intraocular pressure, a study comparing the possible impact of caffeinated and decaffeinated drinks on glaucoma risk has yet to be carried out. Writing in the British Journal of Ophthalmology, researchers in the USA describe the association between consumption of coffee, tea or soft drinks and this condition, which affects over 2.7 million people in America alone, and nearly 60 million worldwide.

This is a nationally representative annual survey of around 10,000 people that includes interviews, physical examinations and blood samples, created to gauge the health and nutritional status of U.S. adults and children.

Out of the 84 participants who were found to have glaucoma, there appeared to be no link between drinking coffee, soft drinks or iced tea and them having the condition.

Tea lovers, rejoice. A cup of hot tea a day can keep glaucoma (blindness) away. After accounting for potentially influential factors, like smoking and diabetes, hot tea drinkers were 74% less probable to have glaucoma.

Because this is an observational study, researchers say no firm conclusions can be drawn about why this may be.

As a part of their assessment, the participants were quizzed on their drinking habits, including how much coffee, hot tea, decaffeinated tea, soft drinks, and iced tea they had drunk over the past year, and how often.

The study also had other limitations, such as the small number of participants with glaucoma and a lack of detailed information about the timeline of diagnosis.

"Further research is needed to establish the importance of these findings", the researchers said. Still, this is good news if you're a tea drinker.

According to registered dietitian Andy De Santis, green, black and oolong teas contain important antioxidants known as flavonoids, which are being explored for their potential health benefits.
