Facebook will no longer pay publishers to create Facebook Live videos

Pre-roll ads will soon start hitting original Watch tab videos-and that's the latest from Facebook.

Facebook Inc. said it would promote videos more on its news feed on December 14.

Social networking giant Facebook wants to use its centrepiece product to build interest in episodic shows and to compete more directly with YouTube, the Google-owned video-sharing platform, which is also the world's second largest social media network.

Facebook's News Feed, which comprises posts from friends and businesses, is the first thing its 2.1 billion users see when they open the mobile app or go to the website, making it valuable online real estate. The social networking company has announced some changes to video distribution and monetization on its platform. It launched a video service Watch, which featured shows from Vox and Discovery Communication in August.

A complex ranking system determines which posts people see first, and a year ago, Facebook released a statement of "News Feed values" emphasising that posts from friends and family would come first. Now, apparently, even Zuckerberg is going to learn to like, if not love, pre-roll ads.

Videos that are part of a series or from creators churning out regular content will now get preferential placement in the news feed. People can also submit shows in a similar way they submit on YouTube.

The Ad Break change is one way Facebook is trying to ensure users are watching ads as brands demand greater insight into the viewability of the ads they invest in. In January, eligibility will shift to videos that are at least three minutes long with the earliest possible ad break at the one-minute mark. However, Facebook released a statement of "News Feed values" emphasising that posts from friends and family would come first. Previously, videos in the test were eligible for Ad Breaks if they were a minimum of 90 seconds, with the first Ad Break able to run at 20 seconds. "Viewer satisfaction numbers are typically hard to lift, so this indicates a positive shift - increasing the likelihood people will continue watching the content through the break".
